William's Story
Came to Marion in 1955? from DC area. Mom and step-father moved to Florida so I went to Marion to live with Dad and step-mother. Two step sisters, step brother. I was looked upon by them as the proverbial b.st.rd step child. Anyway, I was sort of a loner, no true friends, not very rememberable.
After graduation I enlisted in the Army. My step-mother asked where I was going, I waved and said Good Bye. Dad was out on a railroad run, as usual.
Somehow I ended up in New Mexico at a Nuclear Weapons Base. Ole dumb dorky skinny as sed me from HHS. At least I could speak Spanish thanks to Mrs. Carol Geisler at HHS. Spanish I/II.
Got out of the Army in '64 and went to work for National Cash Register in Ft. Lauderdale/Miami until '72. Out of curiosity I went down to the railroad office and I was hired on the spot to work at Hialeah. Very nepotistic is the railroad. However, Dad in Marion worked for the Erie so I was a shoe-in.
Worked for SCL until '75 when I transferred to Florence/Charleston SC. Attended the Ralp...Expand for more
h Pharis School of Locomotive Engineers. Cost me major $. But I received my Locomotive Engineer degree. Worked there to '83 when I transferred to Amtrak.
Moved to Sanford, Florida in '83 to work the Amtrak AutoTrain from Sanford to Florence SC and return. Worked with Jim Lagos (HHS '61)for a many years there. Jim worked in the diesel shop and I was train engineer. I worked the A-Train until Sept. 2006 when I retired.
My Dad passed away Columbus Day 2002. Great day to sail away to his reward. That was the last time I was in Marion. No one else left so no real reason to return.
So I am retired now, 34 yrs on the railroad. Taking life easy in Sanford. Had a bear in my back yard a month or so ago. Maybe some day I will stumble back to Marion. It is a shame Islay's, Gallegher's Murphy's, Turoff's? is gone. I do love Islay's ice cream and I still buy the Klondikes even if they are now lite ice cream (Used to be 400+ calories, now 225 or so) and owned by Uni-Lever or some big conglomerate.
