William's Story
Hmmmm, Where to begin.... :))
Well, life was made for living and that is what I have tried to do. After serving in the military (Submarine Service)on active duty for almost 10 years, I got out and went to work as a civilian for the Department of the Navy on Submarines for another 14 years. After living and working in many places I decided to change my career and left the Department of Defense and went to work for NOAA and the National Weather Service, which is under the Department of Commerce.
With this job, I finally moved back to New York State (actually Long Island, it IS NOT upstate ;)) after close to 30 years. I retired from government service in 2005 after serving as the Deputy CIO for the NWS Eastern Region, and started teaching Computer Science as an Adjunct Instructor for a local community college that is part of SUNY. I have since been promoted to Adjunct Assistant Professor. I had a private IT Consulting business for several years and I was a VP/CTO of a start up Green Energy company known as Solar Utility Network Systems, Inc. or SUN Systems, Inc. I still visit Washingtonville upon occasion (but not as often since my sister moved to VA a many years ago). I attended the multi-year reunion and while there were many Washie Alumni, the Class of "67" had a very small, but great representation.
I still enjoy learning about anything and everything. I adopted an old "Will Rogers" quote as my personal mantra, "When you're through learning, you're through." I love to Scuba Dive and hold a Master Diver and Mixed Gas certification, enjoy canoeing, camping, fishing, writing and cooking. I work hard, play hard and enjoy meeting people from all walks of life. Still have a few things to do and try (I suppose you'd call it my "Bucket List"), but for the most part I truly enjoyed teaching. It gave me a way to give back to future generations, that which I have been fortunate enough to have learned and lived. Still mulling over the prospect o...Expand for more
f pursuing my Ph.D., but procrastination is winning at the moment. I enjoyed watching my daughters pursue their education. Funny how when I think back, I could not wait to get out of school and be done with it forever. Then as I got older, I really enjoyed going back and learning :)). Anyhow, life is not a dress rehearsal or a do over, it's one time through and there's so much to learn and do, and so little time to do it all, but I am going to continue to try!
Addendum:
Since this was written, I have retired for the most part other than teaching at a local SUNY Community College Campus until 2015. In 2014 Thanksgiving weekend my Twenty-Five, year old daughter had a Heart Attack and remained in a coma for nearly 70 days. She passed in February of 2015 and she never knew she had been accepted to Stonybrook University Pre-Med program that she had worked so hard to get into. As sometimes happen, my wife and I separated and eventually divorced. I moved to upstate (CNY) in 2018 and in 2019 bought a small (7.5 acre) home in Williamstown, NY (Postal code is Altmar, NY) where I spent most of my childhood. I was elected to the Williamstown Town Council in 2020 and have family in the area. I have a part time job in Pulaski, NY and enjoy meeting new friends and stay busy. Still working on my book, learning, reading and working around my place. My recent picture was taken at my second daughter's graduation from Rutgers and lives in NJ while my eldest (my Son) lives in Connecticut. Life has been full of experiences, people and many places and I am grateful to have lived it to the fullest. I enjoy upstate NY and happy to spend my remaining years here, the place that I call home. I feel blessed that God has given me the life I've lived and the people I have met along the way. The World has changed so much in the past 60+ years, but the values instilled in me during my youth brought me this far. Life is what you make it and mine has been a helluva ride.
