William's Story

Life WILLIAM A. ROGERS, JR. (Will) CAPTAIN, US NAVY (retired) Captain Rogers, born in Rotan, Texas in 1950, attended Permian High School in Odessa, Texas. After graduation from the US Naval Academy in 1972, with a BS degree having majored in Physics and Mathematics, he attended Nuclear Power Training at Mare Island, California, the S1W Prototype at Idaho Falls, ID, and Submarine School in Groton, CT. Then Ensign Rogers reported to USS GURNARD (SSN 662) in San Diego, CA, where he served as Machinery Division Officer, Main Propulsion Assistant and Weapons Officer while qualifying in submarines. Lieutenant Rogers left Gurnard in January 1976 and became Instructor and Division Director, Chemistry, Materials, and Radiological Controls Division of the Officer Training Department at Nuclear Power School in Orlando, FL. After attending the Advanced Course at Submarine School, he was assigned as Engineer Officer, USS KAMEHAMEHA (SSNB 642) (BLUE) stationed in Groton, CT, from September 1978 to February 1981. In May 1981, Lieutenant Commander Rogers joined USS BIRMINGHAM (SSN 695) in Norfolk, VA, as Operations Officer and Navigator. He served in USS SPADEFISH (SSN 668), also in Norfolk, as Executive Officer from May 1983 to May 1986. While on board he participated in the Grenada rescue mission in October, 1983, Arctic Operations in 1984, and supported operations against Libya in April 1986. In August 1986, Commander Rogers was assigned to Commander, Operational Test and Evaluation Force in Norfolk, VA, as Sonar, Weapons, Combat Systems, and Seawolf Operational Test Director. As Commanding Officer of the Gold Crew USS FRANCIS SCOTT KEY, stationed in Charleston, SC, and operating out of King's Bay, GA, Commander Rogers conducted five strategic deterrent patrols. s Bay, GA. Captain Rogers relieved as Commanding Officer, NROTC Atlanta, in June 1994. While serving as the Professor of Naval Science at Georgia Tech and Morehouse College, he completed an MBA from Brenau University. Captain Rogers then served as Competitive Sourcing team leader for the Department of the Navy Organization, Management, and Infrastructure Team (DONOMIT) in Alexandria, VA. Captain Rogers last duty station was as director of the Navy's Strategic Sourcing Support Office (3SO) stationed in Millington, TN. The 3SO was an OPNAV detachment serving as internal consultant to Navy and Marine Corps issues involving infrastructure reduction initiatives. Captain Rogers retired from the Navy on June 30, 2002. Captain Rogers is entitled to wear the submarine officer's gold dolphins, the submarine detterent patorl pin with two silver and one gold star, and the command at sea pin. For medals and ribbons he also wears the Legion of Merit, the Meritorious Service Medal with four gold stars in lieu of five awards, the Navy Commendation Medal with two gold stars in lieu of three awards, the Navy Achievement Medal, the Navy Unit Commendation, the Meritorious Unit Commendation with three bronze stars in lieu of four awards, the Battle Efficiency "E" Ribbon with wreath in lieu of six awards, the Navy Expeditionary Medal, the National Defense Service Medal with two bronze stars in lieu of two awards, the Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal with one bronze star in lieu of two awards, the Humanitarian Service Medal, the Sea Service Deployment Ribbon with one silver star and two bronze stars in lieu of eight awards, the Arctic Service Ribbon with one bronze star in lieu of two awards, and the Rifle and Pistol Sharpshooter Ribbons. Captain Rogers resides in Granbury, Texas, with his wife, the former Dee Santora of Marietta, GA. He has two sons, David and Daniel, Lt, USCG, and one daughter, Rachel.
