William's Story
As I am sure most of you would agree, it has been a long, strange trip out of Birmingham to where I am (or to where you are) now, which is Cincinnati OH.
In 1987 I ditched U of M with a degree in physics and math, played in a few bands, and drove a lumber truck in Detroit. Shortly thereafter, I ditched reality and lived on a small farm in Maine, developing horticultural skills which would come in handy when I started work at Ohio State U. in the crop/soils program and entomology departments. Columbus OH was a good time in the 90s. Played in bands, ran a farm for OSU, rode motorcycles (BMW R100GS for all you motorheads out there). At the tender age of 30 I started work on a Ph.D.
I had met my wife-to-be in Ann Arbor in 1986. We shacked up for a long time. I knew she was the right one when she recalled the line-ups for the MC5 and Roxy Music, and corrected me by pointing out that Ted "The Dimwit Baby Boomer" Nugent did not sing "Stranglehold" (the evidence is overwhelming that it was Derek St. Holmes...Expand for more
). We married in 1999, and I finished my doctoral work in 2000.
After a few brief postdoctoral research assignments, I started work at USEPA (Ofc. of Research and Development), where I serve in the public interest as a research hydrologist. I research clever ways to induce US citizens to tangibly participate in environmental management, and then conduct field experiments to determine the effectiveness of these approaches. I currently work with stormwater, which is a pervasive social and environmental ill in the US.
We are urbanites, walk and bicycle a lot, have a son (8.5) and a daughter (5). I am (shockingly...to some) active at our local Presbyterian church (much like I was growing up....), still a pretty mean bassist (on the Alembic 8-string or trusty Jazz or Precision though a Hiwatt or Marshall JCM800 full- stack), and a doting father.
I have caught up with a few of you over this um, *unique* web system, and look forward to seeing many more my former classmates at the reunion, um *in 2013*.
