William's Story

Life After high School I went to work in the machine shop at the local NAPA auto parts store. I have always had an interest in electronics and when a job opened at the local car stereo store (Hommans Car Stereo) I took the position as a repair tech. The job lasted for about a year and the shop started to fail as car stereo equipment began to get cheaper and it was more cost effective to replace units than repair them. I wound up going back to the NAPA store and working nights at the stereo shop. One winter night on my way to the night job, a pickup truck pulled out in front me. This wouldn't have been so bad if I wasn't riding a motorcycle. I was left in a wheelchair for 2 months and out of work for a year. I did odd jobs to the best of my ability during that year and part of the next year. During that time I worked for the local Euro Import Auto shop (Car Care) as a Fiat mechanic. I got hooked up with business that did repair-refurbish for Marrantz home audio equipment. I worked and learned all I could in that field and when a job working for a Government contracto...Expand for more
r opened at Ft Irwin I applied as a video tech and got the job. I really liked the job and all of the people that I worked with including all of the Army personnel that that I had contact with. It was a fun job but it was high pressure and long hours and I was not home as much as I should have been. With my personal life in shambles I quit and moved to Fallon NV taking a job with Ford Aerospace doing video system maintenance. What a shock that was! I went from working on state of the art equipment to vacuum tube technology which was common for the Navy at the time. The contract lasted five years and Ford Aerospace was bought by Loral Aerospace during that time. With the ground electronics contract done, Loral sill operated the EWR contract and I went to work in the Comm shop out there. In 1998 a job at the local Phone Company opened, I applied for the position and was hired. In 2000 I was promoted as Engineer and this is where I am today. After a divorce I am now married to a fine woman, we own our home and travel around in our motor home when we can find the time.
