William's Story
Men are essentially what we do, not what we think, so here is what I have done. If you want to know about thoughts, you will need to ask.
After a couple of years at Fullerton College I worked for the City of Los Angeles and studied computer programming. Next stop the University of Iowa for a B.A. and M.A. while working as a programmer (no social life). All this education got me a job with the Dade County, Florida Sheriff as a programmer (experience trumps education). After a year I began working at the Miami Herald and meeting people. With the end of the billing system rewrite, I moved on to managing and analyzing in house consumer surveys for the Fort Lauderdale Sun-Sentinel and elected President of the Volunteer Docents at Flamingo Gardens (Botanical Garden). I bought a house and planted every exotic plant I could make space for.
When the next economic downturn eliminated my job (and the 32 people reporting to me) I was recruited by Scarborough Research in New York to solve a problem designing and processing their surveys (syndicated consumer research--I became the in-house social scientist and statistician again). Good bye tropical plants, and hello museums, concerts and theater. I made new friends. I solved their problem and I was recruited...Expand for more
by a sister company, Trade Dimensions to solve a problem modeling sales projections for retail businesses. I moved to Connecticut, worked in a windowed office and had "Director of Research" on my door. I made still more friends and discovered still more museums, concerts and theaters. Eventually Trade Dimensions was absorbed by a bigger sister company and I took early retirement.
Now I visit friends from Montreal to Miami, visit museums, attend concerts and see a bit of theater. I am working on an article about early baseball with a friend, and I must admit that I love the New York Library Archives Collection. I enjoy the four seasons, and in spite of having no skill, I enjoy cross country skiing when we have enough snow (damn global warming). I make an annual trip to Southern California to visit cousins and take them to the museums in their own territory. (Joan Irvine founded a lovely little museum dedicated to California Impressionism. I recommend it highly. It is near John Wayne Airport but it could be in either Irvine or Costa Mesa; I never did have a good sense of direction.)
I have probably left out something interesting so I will answer any questions (and at my age I do not filter the answers so please phrase your questions carefully)..
