William's Story

Hi all! So many have stopped by to check out who is this guy that needs to dine with a paper bib. The picture was taken while feasting on crab legs in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina. It's one of our family's favorite places to vacation. My wife and I now live in Lynchburg, Virginia which is smack dab in the middle of Virginia and is an easy 5 hour drive to the Carolinas. You might be thinking, 'how does someone growing up in cosmopolitan San Francisco end up in a small town of Lynchburg, VA?' Well, it took awhile. After graduating with the class of '65, I attended City College and a technical school that had curriculum targeting software development. This led to an offer to work for a mutual fund company down by the Ferry Building. By the time 1976 rolled around, I was working for a life insurance company that decided to move its headquarters to La Jolla just north of San Diego. Being single (by divorce) at the time, the company asked if I was willing to relocate and, as a part of the relocation package, they would buy my house located in the east bay town of Lafayette. I always felt I would leave the bay area someday so I accepted the offer. By 1994, I had found God and this relationship imparted a peace in my life that surpasses all understand. In the years leading up to 1994, I continued my work with the life insurance company and became a manager of 15 software developers. r us because the insurance company was taken over by the state of California and was shutting it down. My wife and I had a decision to make. My wife grew up in the LA area and did not want to return to all the traffic congestion and smog. Staying in California was no longer an option. Our first thought was to head north to Oregon. Nothing wowed us so we looked to points east. Having developed contacts over the years with some now working for a life insurance company on the east coast, one of them asked me to send out my resume. The IT management paid to have my wife and I come out for an interview. We loved the Virginia countryside with all the greenery and decided it would be a great place to raise our family so I accepted the offer which included a relocation package. The outdoor life in Virginia and surrounding states is just great if you're into that sort of thing. A city boy turning into a small town outdoor kind of guy may seem odd to some but for me, alleluia! I retired in 2014, and to while away some time, my work shop keeps me busy with some carpentry work, Beyond tinkering with woodwork or building something, my wife and I enjoy seeing plays and plan on taking trips to visit as many state parks and national parks as we can during the spring and summer months; and lastly, we enjoy watching five loving grand kids. Our daughters and sons-in-law live nearby so we have frequent family time together. In retirement, everyday is Saturday except for Sunday.
