William's Story

Life Bio for William A. "Tad" Tweed After graduation, I attended U of D for 3 semesters and then joined the Marine Corps. I graduated from Parris Isand in April 1967, and continued training at Camp LeJeune, NC. From there I went to OCS at Quantico, VA and was commissioned in Jan 1968. More training and then off to Viet Nam with the 1st Marine Division, returning in May 1970. I next landed in Newport, RI as the Supply Officer and later the Executive Officer of the Marine Barracks. In 1972, I went back to Quantico for a mid-level school and back to Camp LeJeune where I took over responsibility for teaching new Supply Officers their trade. In 1973, as a single Captain, I decided it was time to settle down. I fell in love with a pretty 2nd Lt. and we got married and started a family. Back in those days, pregnancy required separation from the service, so she got out just two months before our first child was born in August 1974. We bought a house and spent most of the next 9 years in Jacksonville, NC. In 1982, with five children, we picked up and moved to Okinawa for my final years in the Corps. I spent those final years as a Contracting Officer, purchasing the supplies and services needed by Marine forces on Okinawa. I retired from the Marines in 1987, and we went to Utah so I could finish the degree I had started so many years before. I graduated from BYU in Dec 1990 with a BS in mathematics. At the time, I was doing some trucking on the side so I just moved into that full time, there being little demand for mathematicians in the local area. As an owner-operator, I was leased to a small family run flatbed trucking company out of Monticello, UT and ran for...Expand for more
them for several years hauling anything that would fit on a flatbed. I covered 48 states and several provinces of Canada. Marital issues that had been building since about 1989 final came to a head and my wife of 21 years divorced me in 1995-6. This was a very difficult time for me. I moved back to Maryland in 1996, settling in the Smithsburg area near Hagerstown. At the time, I was an owner-operator leased to North American Van Lines, hauled high-value, specialty electronics shipments, nationwide. In December, 1996, I purchased the family business from my step-father and left my second son, Louis, to operate the hearth products business, selling wood, gas, coal and pellet stoves and other hearth appliances and services. I remained on the road until Jan 2003, when I came off the road to settle in the business. Louis decided that he needed more time for other interests and want to pursue schooling and an interest in machining/metalworking. I am currently running the family business, Mace Energy Supply, Inc., where we sell, install, and service a wide variety of alternate heat sources. We also sell, install, and service chimneys and do a good deal of work in repairing and servicing masonry chimneys. We also sell BBQ grills during the off season. In addition to the normal aray of gas grills, we offer pellet grills which I think are much better since you can alter the flavor of the food by changing the kind of pellets being used. For instance, you can use hickory pellets one time. Then change the flavor to mesquite, alder, or apple for a real variety in your cooking.
