William's Story
School
left Rio and went to Bay Area...worked in construction in Orinda and Concord. Finished undergrad in Michigan and returned to UCD in '72. Attended med school at Michigan State (Human Med not osteopathic). Residency in Family medicine at University of New Mexico and returned to rez to practice.
College
I attended 4 schools during my undergraduate career. The highlight was that I worked for 4 years as an OR nurse and got the medicine bug. I got an undergrad degree in political philosophy and then returned to undergrad to finish the pre-med. I use the poitical philosphy significantly in my career here in DC. I am glad I took the time I did to get from high school to med school since I enjoyed a big slice of life and know the health business from top to bottom.
Workplace
I returned to my original roots and did a family practice residency at the University of New Mexico. We moved back to Zuni...Expand for more
where I grew up as a small child and my family has been located since the 1880's. I practiced there and oversaw the operations of the Indian Health Service hospital. We then moved to DC in 1983 where we have been since.
I have however worked in Alaska, the Dakotas (I was the regional director for 5 states), overseen all our programs in 35 states, and consulted in Canada, Honduras, and Chile. I have worked with Native Hawaiians and Maoris which is a real spiritual experience. I was at the WTC site monitoring the medical response teams. My life has been blessed with rich and full experiences.
I am now an Assistant Surgeon General (a Rear Admiral in Navy ranks)and am working on the re-building of the public health system in the U.S. Recently I have been engaged in consultation to build a women's health system in Afghanistan and organizing professionals for re-building the health infrastructure in Iraq.
