William's Story

EARLY LIFE Born in Buffalo, NY in 1943. Lived in Orchard Park & East Aurora for a couple of years. My father worked at the Orchard Park Press which was created & owned by my grandfather Walter Benjamin Zirbes Sr. We then moved to Java Center to my grandfather's farm (mother's side). We lived there approx. 2 years & then packed up & left for Texas. My father was a medic in the army during WWII & had a dream of becoming a doctor. We settled in San Antonio, TX. There my father attended the Texas Chiropractic College. Upon graduation he interned for about a year with another Doctor. We then left Texas & moved to Tuscaloosa, AL where my father established the Dawn Chiropractic Clinic. For reasons unknown to me, we packed up & left Tuscaloosa & moved to Marion, AL where a new clinic was established. We rented a southern mansion from an Alabama senator for $50 a month on the stipulation that if he had to return to his estate, we would have to vacate the premises. There were two horses available & hundreds of acres to explore & my brother & I enjoyed a couple of good years there until my father became very ill. We then returned to New York, my brother went with my father & I with my mother, to live with her parents whom resided in Bergen, NY. Eventually my parents divorced. SCHOOLING: I entered the fifth grade at the Bergen school district in February of 1954. I was in Mrs. Mitchel's class. She was a great teacher, but Mr.Allen DeHond was the best. I do not remember the names of all the schools I attended as there were so many. I really hoped that Bergen would be the last school I would attend. But, We left to live in Avon, NY in 1955 halfway thru the 6th grade. A year later, we returned to Bergen. I graduated from BBCS in 1961. During my High School years I worked at the Thruway Restaurant near Exit 47 with a couple of my classmates. US NAVY SERVICE: I got a Draft notice in July 1964 but signed up with the Navy on July 30th 1964 before I had to report to the Army. I attended 9 weeks of Boot Camp at Great Lakes NTC in Illinois. I then went on to NATTC Memphis, Tennessee, for 1 year of "A" School and graduated as an Avionics Technician. My next duty station was NAS Lemoore, Calif. for Plane Captain School at VA-125 Training Squadron for 6 weeks. I then flew to Sacramento to catch a MATS flight (Military Air Transport) that took me to Clark AFB in the Philippines (a 16 hour flight with a stopover in Hawaii). Then a bus trip overland to get to NAS Cubi Point. O...Expand for more
n Aug 16, 1965 I flew aboard the carrier USS Oriskany to join my squadron, the GhostRiders (VA164) which was on-line in the Gulf of Tonkin. I was on 2 more deployments. to Vietnam on the USS Oriskany. I was on board during the fire in Oct of 1966. We lost 44 sailors in the fire. Not a good day!!! In Feb. 1967 I was selected as 1 of 11 sailors in the navy to be the first to attend the Electronics Counter Measures school in New Hampshire on a new sophisticated device that would save the lives of many pilots in Vietnam by destroying SAM missiles on the launch pad or in the air before they could take out a plane. LIFE AFTER SCHOOL : I did not pursue higher education (because I thought I knew it all) & my first job was at a Truck Stop refueling tractor trailers for 6 weeks. I worked at Gerber's for 5 weeks & quit. In Sept. of 1961 I was hired by Taylor Instrument Co. & that is where I spent my next 30 years with the exception of my 4 years in the US Navy. MARRIED: I married the love of my life, Judy Johnson on November 30th 1968. We had one child whom we named Scott William Zirbes. He graduated from Byron-Bergen in 1987. He now resides in Florida. At present he is an IT for the Smokey Bones Restaurant; he is also a certified Realtor; drives a Disney bus once a month; & lastly he owns a tour bus, & as the business is doing well he is getting ready to purchase another one. LATER LIFE: I worked first in the burring department. After my Navy service I was sent to the Turret lathe dept. Eventually I was offered a job in the new Electronic division. There I started as a Tester & rose to the position of Manager of the Electronic Test & Repair Dept. with a team of 44 people working with me. We were bought out several times & I was let go in Jan of 1991 along with about 250 others. I was on severance for a year & finally landed a job at a small plastics Injection Molding Co. 2.5 miles from my house. I spent 13 great years there as a Manufacturing Engineer. The company was sold & I could not work with my new bosses & resigned in Oct of 2004. I expected that my work a day world was over with but a friend who worked at Kodak gave my resume to them & I was hired on contract in Feb of 2005 to work in the Digital Camera Repair department. It was an interesting job & I enjoyed the work. They had to let me go in Dec. of 2005. It was a precursor to eliminating the whole division which happened in 2006. RETIREMENT: Judy & I are enjoying our retirement immensely.
