William's Story

William (Bill) Byrnes grew up in Buffalo and attended Hutch-Tech from 1961 to 1964. After graduating he said farewell to Buffalo and headed off to the University of New Mexico to study architecture. He discovered his interests were elsewhere and switched to being an English major. He was lucky to get a job as a stagehand while at UNM in a new concert hall that opened in the fall of 1965. That job helped him pay his way through school and led to a new career track in production management and lighting design. After graduating from UNM in 1970 he was accepted to UCLA's School of Theatre, Film and Television. He completed his MFA in 1972 and took a job as a lectured and Technical Director in the theatre and dance dept at Oberlin College in Oberlin, OH where he stayed for 22 years. He left Oberlin in 1994 to become the Assoc. Dean in the School of Theatre at Florida State University. He also ran the masters degree theatre management program while at FSU. uate seminars and online in board relations and strategic planning, fundraising, economics and financial management, and leadership development. His textbook, "Management and the Arts," now in its 5th edition, is widely used in arts and culture management courses throughout the world. He has lectured on various arts management topics in America and in China, Japan, Singapore, Germany, Serbia, and Italy. He was member of the Editorial Advisory Committee of the Asia Pacific Journal of Arts and Cultural Management. He has been a long-standing member of the USITT Management Commission and has served in various leadership capacities in USITT since 1980, including serving as president in 2000-02. He is a Fellow in USITT and serves on the institute’s Development Committee. Bill was awarded a Lifetime membership in USITT in 2020. He also served on the board of the ESTA Foundation and is a member of the National Theatre Conference. Bill retired in 2017 and moved to the Cincinnati area to be closer to his family. He published a new book in 2019 entitled the "Routledge Companion to Arts Management." He is working on the 6th edition of his textbook "Management and the Arts" which will be published in the fall of 2021.
