William's Story
Life---The info below was written before my move to rural east Texas on the last day of 2008. Moved to Van Zandt County and live with a sister. Other sister live about 5 miles away. I miss the Bay Area terribly, but it's generally good to be around family. ------------------------------------------------------------
I am living in Oakland, California, and I am semi-retired, though I do substitute teaching, and I also have a job as bass section and soloist in the choir at the Unitarian Universalist Church in Berkeley (really, in Kensington). I am divorced, but my daughter Rebecca is living and working in Tucson.
I am planning a monthlong trip next month (June 2007) with my older brother Jim to visit Becky in Tucson, as well as my siblings and their families in New Mexico, Texas, Wisconsin, and Minnesota. I also hope to see a dear friend of mine, with whom I attended Pacific School of Religion, in Berkeley. She went on to attend school at the Mayo Medical School, and is now an M.D.
After retiring from the federal gov't, I spent years doing everything from delivering newspapers, doing a shortlived job in construction (2 sc...Expand for more
rews still in my ankle), singing professionally in the Oakland Symphony Chorus, the San Francisco Symphony Chorus, plus several years in the San Francisco Opera Chorus, where I participated in an Oscar-winning documentary called "In the Shadow of the Stars" (ahem!). ----the truth being that I was on camera, uncredited, for four seconds, but during those 4 seconds, my face filled the screen, and my voice filled the theater! ;-) Another job I did for seven years, until recently, was to run a snack table at an esl, The English Language Program, in the Extension Division of the Univ. of California, Berkeley. During those seven years, I had the great pleasure of visiting informally with college-age students from all over the world. I felt like I was in the United Nations as it should have been! I still correspond with quite a number of them in Brazil, Germany, Italy, Thailand, Taiwan, Japan, Turkey, Venezuela, Poland, etc.
My interests include going to concerts, singing, participating in liberal religious, social, and political groups and conversations, as well as reading, birding, hiking, doing family history, and international cooking.
