William's Story
I graduated from Tech in June of 64 at 17. Worked in my folks body shop until I turned 18 and enlisted in the Air Force. Went to Lackland in late December for basic. Spent two weeks casual waiting for tech school to open in Denver, CO. Was there 16 weeks and got orders for Eglin AFB in Fort Walton Beach FLA.
After 17 months of heaven got orders to start a new wing and get ready for Nam. Went to Homestead AFB near Miami was...Expand for more
there from early Oct. until just before Christmas of 66. Left there and flew to Nome, Alaska then to Yakoda, Japan and then Nam. It was a brand new base and we landed a fully loaded 141 on a thousand foot psp(Perforated Steel Plate) runway. The 141 normally requires a ten thousand foot runway for landing, we ended up with the nose wheels in the South China Sea and it took four tugs to pull it back.
