William's Story
Even though my family moved to Amherst, NY in the middle of my junior year at Claymont, I still consider my roots to be at CHS. We moved back to Delaware in 1963.
I attended the University of Baltimore, then did a turnaround, went to photography school, and pursued a career in photography. I married Janis Hotmer (Mount Pleasant, 1965) in 1971. We are still happily married, living in Hockessin, Delaware. No children. We have two feral cats that adopted us, and now live indoors.
I worked at two commercial photography studios, doing advertising photography for 5 years. I then had the opportunity to work with Ansel Adams one summer, submitted a portfolio, and was accepted. I quit work, went to Yosemite to study with Ansel, and then became a free-lance photographer, working through stock agencies.
I retired in 2007. Since then, I have concentrated mostly on HD digital video as well as editing and converting/archiving many years' worth of negatives and transparencies to digital. Janis retired from DuPont in 2009 after a long, amazing career. She now teaches at Tulaa Yoga Studio on Naaman's road in her spare time.
Janis and I have been very fortunate, and have been able to travel to almost every National Park in the U.S. We have always been outdoor adventure enthusiasts and have backpacked probably hundreds of miles, each carrying 30 to 40 lbs. of camera gear, as well as food and camping equipment.
We've been to Alaska twice, hiked throughout Denali National Park, flown in a 1947 De Havilland Beaver float plane (the same plane used by Timothy Treadwell for "Grizzly Diaries", but with a different pilot) to visit 1000-lb. Kodiak brown bears up close and personal in the Kodiak Island back country. Three days into this trip, 75 miles into Denali NP, I slipped and broke my leg while hiking down a steep, frozen incline to photograph some grizzly bears. It wasn't until two weeks later, many hopping around...Expand for more
hikes, long flights, and lots of tequila (medicinal) that I was able to get medical attention. Fortunately, my leg had swollen to the point that it acted as a cast. No gangrene. No blood clots. It kind of hurt, though. Still does.
We've taken a two week rafting trip through the Grand Canyon, been on safaris to Tanzania, Kenya, Rwanda, and the Congo. We've been lucky enough to experience the "Great Migration" in the Serengeti, hike for 7½ hours up a volcano in Rwanda to see mountain gorillas (the same troupe studied by Dian Fossey, who was beheaded by poachers), hike another 6 hours down in total darkness to the Congo (I slipped into a crevasse and broke my ankle on the way down...more hopping around and delayed medical attention), and live to tell about it. There are still many insurgents and poachers in this area. We couldn't use flashlights or even talk for fear of being targeted by them. Nearly a million people were hacked to death there in 1994 in a dispute between the Tutsi and Hutu people. Bad feelings still linger.)
In 2008 we traveled by riverboat up and down the Peruvian portion of the Amazon River, and then flew to the Andes to visit Machu Picchu. I didn't break anything.
We returned to the Maasai Mara in Kenya in 2010, and arrived in the middle of the Great Migration. Due to extended droughts in Tanzania, the migration had entered Kenya three weeks early, and we arrived right at the ideal time to witness the entire spectacle. There is no way to time your visit to see this amazing event. We were extremely lucky to observe this "once in a lifetime" happening.
I know, it all sounds made-up, or that I'm bragging. Nothing could be farther from the truth. Sometimes Janis and I ourselves can't believe that we have had such great and exciting experiences. We feel we are truly blessed, and don't have a clue why we might or should be.
Photos of a few of our trips are in my photo album.
