William's Story

Note: My story keeps changing because my editor, (Barbara) keeps telling me I need to change or drop things. I hope to someday get it just right) Before I start I need to inform those who remember me as being conservative that over the years I have slowly evolved into a Tree hugging, handgun hating, equal rights for everybody, tax the crap out of the rich, bleeding heart liberal. The final straw was when a NO GOOD LIAR(and You know who I'm referring to)sent a bright, wonderful, good hearted kid that I had watched grow up in my Cub Scout Pack and then My Boy Scout Troop off to Iraq and got him killed for absolutely no reason what so ever. This Young man's only crime in life was needing the Military's help(GI Bill)to go to college. I cannot forgive this no matter how hard I have tried. I DO SUPPORT our President 110% and anyone who makes racial slurs or insults about him (or anyone else) and thinks that I find it amusing or entertaining insults my intelligence and I don't appreciate that. The time for that kind of behavior, and there really has never been one, was long ago and racial hatred has no place in our society and certainly no place anywhere around me. Thank You for your understanding. I retired on disability on December 1,2002 due to severe heart disease. I had Open Heart surgery (Bypass 5 grafts) in May 2001. In addition, since then, I have had 4 stents implanted into my heart. Barbara, my best friend and beloved wife, and I have been married for 31 years. We have been through good times and bad times but have always been there for each other. I cannot imagine anyone else that I would have wanted to spend my life with(OK, Jacklyn Smith of Charlies Angels but what chance did I have there??). We have 3 wonderful children who are now adults. My youngest son, David (Named after David York), and his wife, Samantha (Sam for short) presented Barbara and I with our first grandchild, Orion, on May 15, 2007. (Ironically, While he was being born, I was in the ER with a Blood Pressure of 59/23. This was when I was first Diagnosed with Addison's Disease.) We are doing our best to spoil him rotten. Barbara bought him his first Car when he was 6 months old. David was driving a 1989 Volvo whose AC, among other things, had ceased to function years ago. She went right down to the Honda Dealership to buy him a new car. Fortunate for me, there was a Hyundai Dealership next door and she ended up getting him a Hyundai Accent(at considerable less damage to my checking account). She made it clear,(To David) that the car went where Orion went. I find that David is very much more likely to take care of Orion on a hot day now. After graduation, I went to the ARMY and served in Wiesbaden, Germany until my Separation (DD214) in December 1973. After that I went to work for TVA and worked there for more than 30 years (Federal Service including Military) before my heart forced an early retirement in December 2002. My Cardiologist has told me that my heart failure is in the final stage. He has told me this for the last two years and I'm still here so I just live day to day. My health has actually improved somewhat the last two years. After I was diagnosed with Addison's disease, I was prescribed medications that have made me feel much better. There are only two people in Owensboro who have this disease and I am one of the two! In a strange but true story my pet, a beautiful Golden Lab named Buddy, was also diagnosed with Addison's disease this past April. He died after a good fight at the end of...Expand for more
June and after having him 8 years, Barbara and I feel a emptiness in our hearts now that he is gone. Barbara still cries every time his name comes up. I didn't think it was possible to care for an animal to the extent that we cared for Buddy. With little we could do, We watched this wonderful animal fight for his life and upon acceptance of the end just slip away in his bed much as a human being would. It was like He knew he was going to die and was going to protect us as long as He could. He was a loving and loyal pet. If someone got near to either Barbara or Me he would take their heads off. We miss him very badly. I really had some tough years at South and if I had to do it all again I would concentrate on my studies MUCH more. It took me more than 22 years going at night and on weekends to complete my education. It would have been so much easier to finish in 4. I am very proud of my accomplishment but regret that it took so much time away from my family. I owe George Wallace, THE Governor of Alabama, a great debt for my education. To make a long story short, keeping a campaign promise resulted in my completion of my education. A Even stranger story, I was talked into voting for him by a close friend of my mine who happened to be African American. George won that last election with 71% of the Black vote in Alabama. I Hope to see any and all of you very soon. I hope that all have led happy and moral lives, for in the end being happy really is the most important thing. It is the only thing, along with faith, that you can take with you. I had sincerely hoped to attend this years class reunion, but it is beginning to appear like I am not going to be able to make it. My Cardiologist is scheduling Me for a long list of tests begining May 4th to make a determination as to whether I will need to undergo Open Heart Surgery again. I have had a Bad Valve for some time and He has been keeping an eye on it. He believes it may be getting to the point where it will require repair or replacement. I have noticed that I have been getting fatigued and out of breath really easily lately and he indicated that this is what is causing it. High School is really Important in a persons life. You build friendships which last a lifetime and sometimes you learn of folks which you know will never really be your friends. Its funny to see these same people years later and the acts/games that they play. I have just a very few sincere friends who I know I can count on. One is my wife Barbara. David York and His Wife Martha have always been there me and hopefully I have been there for them. Pudd, I fell in love with her years ago!!and last but certainly not least or all is David Watt..... It broke my heart the last time I seen him. He was living over in North Knoxville in a rundown apartment. I believe he already had the cancer that would take his life. He was a true friend. When I was in the Army and after TVA had moved me to Alabama, there were times my parents, due to their bad health, needed someone to help them. My Mom would call David and he would always come and help them. Not once did he make any excuse, he just always helped. When I learned that he had passed away I couldn't stop thinking that somehow I should have made a better effort to have helped him. He was a good man despite his many shortcomings, which We all have in one way or another. I ask God, in my daily prayers, to give him the contentment, Happiness, and love that he couldn't find here. I ask that you do the same.
