Ronald L.'s Story
Life
After 3 years in the Army Security Agency, I returned to Lamar Tech for a BA in History and government in 1966. Finished my MEd. and EdD at U of H in 1975. I retired in 2003 with 37 years in public school and 21 as an adjunct professor of political science. The last 10 years I was principal of a disciplinary school during the day and an alternative high school at night.
I started a part-time woodworking endeavor in 1982, when I built a bedroom set, so now I can spend some more time with woodworking. At our home, I have a woodshop to play in. Really though, my wife, two sons, a daughter and a step-son, along with five grandchildren make my life good.
2005: Life has some interesting twists and turns. The high school principal had a heart attack in January, 2005, so I went back as a "substitute administrator" for the spring semester. Sure makes one appreciate retirement.
2005: The school district called again this fall for a substitute administrator at the high school, so I jumped in again. What the heck? I signed on with a consulting group to work as a consultant with school districts that have problems.
2006: Okay, I promise I'll retire this year. The district needed an interim assistant principal at the high school for the fall, so I went back again. Interestingly enough, when I was 42, I asked the Superintendent to not hire a 65 year-old man as an assistant because I felt that it would be too much for him. Know what? It is. 50-60 hour weeks for the last nine weeks have been tough. I'm glad the District is going to hire a real assistant principal next Tuesday night, so five days from now I will retire again. It will be nice to do the yard work, ride the bike and "play" in the shop again. Unfortunately, the district never did hire anyone, so I quit in October in time to do a two-week stay in Branson.
2007: I went back for most of the spring semester, BUT I did retire for the 5th time so we could make the trip to Germany in May. It was the first trip back since I left Berlin in May, 1963. Driving the autobahn from Frankfurt to Berlin was a blast! Nothing like driving 85 miles an hour and have a Mercedes, doing 175, pass you on the left. $8 a gallon for gasoline was an eye-opener.
While I was in Germany, I missed a meeting of the local crafts co-op store and was elected President. The moral of the story is "never miss a meeting". Anyway, I guess I have "retired for the last time" from the school business. Wow! Forty-one years in school. This must be Mr. Duff's revenge for all the stuff I did in his chemistry class. But, that triple distilled alcohol that we made did have an interesting kick!
Fall 2007: Well retirement didn't last that long. I am working for 6 weeks as an assistant principal in my old discipline school. HOWEVER, I will be out in time to make the fall crafts shows and take two weeks in Branson.
Spring 2008: We did the fall crafts' shows and stayed in Branson for a week. Then I got a large order for...Expand for more
Mesquite picture frames for a new office building in Ft. Worth, which tied me up for November and December. It's work, but a day in the shop does not count against ones' allotment of days. Sounds good anyway. I have scheduled some visits to Mesquite crafts' shows in the spring, so that will preclude doing school work. I guess I have finally, really retired!
Well, I did work January and March at the old discipline school, HOWEVER, the wife and I did take in the Texas Mesquite Association spring show in San Angelo. Fantastic workmanship there! Prices do reflect the professionalism of the workers! Got some good ideas. It's now May and I'm working on some furniture products that should show up soon on my website.
2009: The lawyer-owner cancelled the lease for our crafts co-op, but a store owner across the street offered us his building. So, we spent the summer closing down the old store and opening up the new. Fewer members now, so there will be more WORK.
2010: The store is a success. Almost wish that I had earned an MBA, it sure would have made the exercise easier. Ha!
Workplace
After graduation, I taught history, political science, and German at Clear Creek (NASA) and math and history at Liberty. I was a junior high assistant principal in Corpus Christi and high school assistant in Flour Bluff (Corpus Christi). Elementary principal in Livingston and Kingsville. Middle school principal, discipline school principal and alternative high school principal in Kingsville. Also a curriculum director in Dayton and I picked up 21 years adjunct professor status at Alvin and Del Mar junior colleges, Houston, Stephen F. Austin and A&M/Kingsville. So, I had a varied career that gave me a lot of fulfillment.
Got serious about my woodworking business after I retired in 2002 and that has worked out well. It's nice to cut a tree down, saw it up at the sawmill, dry the boards at the house and then turn that wood into something useful, from pens and banks to furniture.
Military
I joined the Army Security Agency in 1960. After Basic Training (E-4-2) at Ft. Leonard Wood, MO, I took German (GE 6-54) at the Army Language School in Monterey, CA. Then, I served two years in Berlin with the 78th US Army Security Agency Special Operations Unit. Got there a couple of weeks before the "Wall" went up, so it was an interesting time. Traveled extensively in Germany, Upper Austria, Switzerland and Italy, shot a lot of pictures and met a lot of interesting people. Great time of my life. Made sergeant in 21 months, and probably would have stayed in, but college was "calling", so I decided to get out and get a degree. By the time that I graduated in 1966, I wanted to teach more than I wanted to wear a uniform, so I got out of the Reserves and have looked back only occcasionally.
My oldest son will retire with 28 years in Army aviation (Apache pilot) as a Lt. Colonel. The youngest son went airborne for six years and then got out to be a fireman/EMT in Dalllas.
