Woody's Story

Life I relocated to Honolulu, Hawaii in 1990 after graduating with my Associates of Arts in graphic design at South Western Michigan College. I transferred to the University of Hawaii and continued with a Bachelors of Arts degree. During those two years, I was working at an antique Japanese sword shop part time as swords were also an interest of mine. I became interested in Japanese swords during high school which stemmed from my involvement with martial arts. After college, I decided to go back to Niles/South Bend to pursue something else that was a strong interest of mine which was music. Together, Lance Hunt and I worked hard to compile a demo CD that never really materialized, unfortunately due to work schedule differences and locations. I was employed at a dental laboratory and St. Joseph County Archives and Records Center. After spending six years in South Bend and Niles, I decided I had better move back to Hawaii to pursue my interests furth...Expand for more
er in the Japanese sword studies as I foresaw a better career opportunity. I Moved back to Honolulu in 1998 and was an apprentice under my former employer that owned the Japanese sword shop. Since then, I worked hard to achieve my goal at becoming a full time sword polisher and to make a living doing so. In that time, I have recieved two awards from the Tokyo Japanese Sword Museum that qualify me as a sword polisher and restorer. In 2004, I met my future wife Kumi who was living in Hawaii on a work visa from Tokyo for a company called JALPak, which is a tour travel agency for Japanese tourists coming to Hawaii and is a subsidiary company of Japan Airlines. We were married in 2005 and had a baby girl in the spring of 2007. My hobbies are collecting and studying Japanese swords, music, spending quality time with my family and maintaining my Mini Cooper S, my other baby. Throughout all this time in Hawaii, it has been a great and fulfilling experience.
