Ruth's Story
Life
My Spouse
Tim Sutton and I met when we were
freshmen at Handy. We had Biology class
together with Mr. Vandemark. We
started dating as juniors, and
married a year out of high school.
We've bumped along since 1974...have lived in Alaska, New
Hampshire, Maine, Michigan, North
Dakota (go Sioux!) and now New Mexico.
We've survived earthquakes, volcano eruptions, tornadoes, blizzards, sand storms and probably some other weather conditions that escapes me. No hurricanes yet.
Our Kids
Michael was born in 1979 and graduated from Northern Michigan University with degrees in history and ceramics. He looks like his dad, so he's cute! He's written a four-part novel and I hope he'll be published. He has quite a lot of talent for someone who always said he hated to write. Fortunately, many of his teachers (and his mother) thought he had a lot of talent and urged him to write.
Laura was born in 1981 and graduated from Grand Valley State Univesity with a creative writing degree. She is an extremely talented writer and we're hoping she'll be the next JK Rowling. She's started lots of books but hasn't finished anything. We're hoping she'll learn how to finish a book in grad school. She's also very beautiful! (of course this is only a mother's observation!)
My Pets
Lily is our "grandcat." She's our daughter's cat and we were keeping her until Laura finished ...Expand for more
grad school. However, we reneged on that promise and told her she can't have her back! She's our cat now.
Gracie is a long-haired black & white cat who is a whopping 17 pounds and is talkative.
Then there's Sophie, our baby. She found Tim one late-fall morning as he left work. We think she was just abandoned. But she found a good home. All Sutton pets are cosseted.
My Job
We now live in Albuquerque, New Mexico where I work as a Public Affairs Specialist for the U.S. Forest Service's new Human Resource group. Prior to accepting this position, I worked on the Hiawatha National Forest in Michigan's Upper Peninsula. I was the writer-editor in the plannng shop as we revised the Forest Plan. The biggest challenge was that I only had two science classes in college and all the resource specialists only had 2 English classes, so they couldn't write well and I hadn't a clue what they were talking about! The end result was I learned a lot about rare plants, animals, timber harvests, etc. and they had documents that most people understood.
And before that, I spent 14 years in the newspaper industry. I did earn a BA in Journalism, but have never worked as a reporter. But I did work in marketing, community relations and managed a classified advertising department. I worked for the Anchorage Daily News when we won our second Pulitzer Prize. That was very exciting.
