Richard's Story

Life After graduating from Woodward I attended Montgomery Jr. College, University of Florida, University of Maryland and then decided that I wanted to continue in the family tradition and joined the Metropolitan Police Department in October 65'. I married my childhood sweetheart, Jo Wells, in April 66'. We had two girls, Robin Lynn (11/68) and Susan Lynn (12/70). I returned to school in 67' and graduated from A.U. in 69'. Jo and I were divorced in 81'. In 83', after living in Maryland for most of my adult life, I moved back into the city. I lived on Orchid St. N.W. until I retired in August 89'. Most of my career was spent in the various investigative assignments. From 75' to 85' I was detailed to the U.S. Capitol Police where I was the commander of the Criminal Investigation Division. While assigned to the Hill, I ran into Mr Gault (Woodward English teacher) who was working for the House, Owen Bradshaw (Class of 59') who was also an employee of the House and Les Sidel , who was with the United States Attorney's Office. Upon retiring, I purchased a Civil War era farm outside of Luray, Va. on the Shenandoah River. There I spent the next 13 years restoring the home and outbuildings and establishing a vacation rental business on the property. I remarried in October 97'. My wife, Tammy and I worked on the place together and enjoyed traveling to out of the way places. In April 00', Tammy was criticly injured while we working on a project on the farm and died 12 hours later. So, I decided to do something that I had ...Expand for more
been wanting to do since my first visit in 69' and that was to move to Montana. I purchased land in the N.W. corner of the State and in 02' started building my ranch. Here, I spend my time working on the place, playing with my dogs and horses and enjoying the pristene enviornment and abundant wildlife. My main hobby iss raftin and kayking the rivers here in NW Montana, One to four day floats, camping on the shore for the night. In May 07' I opened up a guest lodging business on the ranch. For those interested or planning a trip to the Northern Rockies , check out TX-Ranch. My oldest daughter resides in Maryland. Robin, her husband and my two grandsons reside in Monrovia. Robin retired from , and her husband is, a members of the Montgomery Co. Police Department. My youngest daughter, Susan and her husband and my two granddaughters live in N. Wales, PA.. Susan is a medical lab tech. Bill workd for Booz - Allen. The only Woodward alumnus that I keep in touch with is Jack Schamp and Rex Bassinger. . Jack and I ran in to each other in 69' while working and we have remained like brothers ever since. Jack retired in 02' from the U.S. Park Police where he was serving as Deputy Chief. He now resides in Boulder City, Nv. We were both pall bearers for Ray. Hawkins, also Class of 61' and a United States Park Police officer. Ray was shot and killed during a hold up at a 7-11 in 71'. Folding to family pressure to move back East, I sold my ranch in Montana in July 20' and moved to rural Baker , West Virginia in October 20'.
