Xavier's Story

Life Xavier Mejia represents a generation that has never known a world without AIDS. Throughout his high school years in Los Angeles, it was his personal mission to serve as an activist and advocate for gay youth. Xavier has been involved with numerous agencies dealing with issues that affect all youth. In 2001 Xavier participated in L.A. Shanti’s youth program, STAHR! (Somebody’s Talking About HIV Risk). As a result of his participation in this program, he dedicated himself to educating youth in an effort to reduce the risk of transmission of HIV. ding education and intervention regarding HIV/AIDS, STDs, drug, alcohol, and tobacco use. In August 2002, Xavier joined Public Allies, a non-profit organization that encourages diverse young leaders to strengthen their communities through nonprofit work and civic participation. Upon completion of the Public Allies program, Xavier returned to L.A. Shanti as the Assistant to the Executive Director, and later became the Coordinator of CITY Project. Xavier has recently moved to San Diego in efforts to write a book about his high school experience as a gay youth. He is currently the Program Manager of Health Education for the Hillcrest Youth Center.
