Armando's Story

In Guadalajara, Jalisco, Mexico, before we arrived in the United States, I started working at the age of 9 (nine) at a shoe factory; a year later I got a job at “La Panaderia Bimbo” since they gave me 3 day old bread to take home to my mother, 3 sisters and baby brother George. A year later I went to work at a “Schwinn Bike Assembly; after a year I bought my own bike so I could stop taking the bus. My daily schedule was wake up at 6:00 AM, take the bus to school, play on the soccer team, take the bus to work, come home at 9:00 PM; do my homework and the start all over again….. (no child labor laws in Mexico).
After arriving illegally in the U.S. we lived in East Los Angeles on Fisher Street near City Terrace Park. Surrounded by Gangs; El Hoyo Mara, White Fence, Garredy, City Terrace Boys, and a few others. Never joined… to busy… but friends with all of them. As I prepared for High School, I took the SAT’s and ACT’s, my scores qualified me to attend Bosco Tech in San Gabriel, California. All my friends were attending Salesian High School on Soto and Whittier Boulevard also East Los Angels and became a Mustang for life. Starting as a freshman in the 9th grade and up to the 12 grade, I qualified for all College Prep and Honors Classes. Most of my friends were in “Shop and Vocational” Classes; and I noticed we were growing slowly apart, but we remained “Mustangs” for life.
Prior to graduation, our Principal, Father Murphy, submitted on my behalf (all paid by Father Murphy), applications to USC, Harvard, Yale, Princeton, Columbia, Stanford, Berkeley, Cal-Tech and MIT. I was accepted to all of them but not with 100% Tuition Scholarship, 100% Books or 100% Room and Board. Most scholarships ranged from 50% to 80%, but none were 100%. When we arrived illegally in the U.S. I found a part-time job at Sears (lied about my age). My family (single mom) and my part-time job at Sears could not afford the balance of the tuition (that ranged from $15,000 to $30,000 per year (back then). I chose to stay close to home and attend the least expensive post secondary education I could pay for myself. I worked full time 40 hours and attended East Los Angeles Community College. I carried 18 to 22 units per semester. Within 18 months I received my AA and with enough credits I was accepted at UNLV with 100% Scholarship, books and Room and Board. I became a "Running Rebel" at the University of Nevada Las Vegas, UNLV (I am still a “Rebel”). This gave me the opportunity to stay close to home (3 hours driving my 57 Chevy Nomad), and thus could help with the household expenses and insure that my siblings (3 sisters and 1 brother) would also complete their education. I worked hard, studied harder and I definitely played 3 times as hard at night and on the weekends! Nothing beats attending college at UNLV while living in Las Vegas (school by day.... party by night). All school and University study was easy for me… attend class, pay attention, read the books, do your homework and pass tests… piece of cake. I graduated with a Summa Cum Laude distinction. I interviewed with IBM for an Internship in my Junior year at UNLV and was hired by IBM upon graduation (IBM was a 50 billion dollar computer giant). I started as a Systems Analyst for the Office Products Division and was promoted to Sales Executive after my 2nd year. After 5 years I left to go to work at Xerox Systems Networking Division and Xerox Special Information Systems (Xerox was a "Baby Giant" Corporation at only 18 billion dollars). These Xerox Divisions were responsible for inventing; the office of the future including the graphical user interface (now known as Windows), the mouse, laser printers, distributed processing, voice and email systems, the wide area network, these products, software and services are now known as Windows and the World Wide Web. After 15 years at Xerox and promoted to a number of positions of progressively greater responsibility, starting as a Team Sales Manager, Branch Manager, District Manager, Regional Training Manager and culminating within the Xerox Special Information Systems (XSIS) as the Vice President, General Manger of Sales for Latin America (that included Mexico, Central and South America and the Caribbean), I took the annual sales for this assignment from $18 million a year to over $250 million. Xerox paid for my M.B.A. from Pepperdine University and my Juris Doctoarate from Loyola University. Working 24/7 and going to school (university) every Saturday form 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM for 3 years, I had no time to do the things I wanted to. So, why work for corporate America when I can work for myself and serve my community. I left Xerox to start my own business. So, here I am at CSYGlobal.com I believe in service to my community and this includes the following; The Latino Business Alliance of the Inland Empire (Chairman and CEO), The Fontana Hispanic Chamber of Commerce (President). The East Los Angeles College Alumni Association, Member of the Board of Directors and Chair of the Signature Events and Distinguished Alumni Committees. I am a proud member and supporter of the Alumni Associations of East Los Angeles, College (ELAC), University of Nevada at Las Vegas (UNLV), University of Pepperdine (UOP), MBA paid by Xerox, and Loyola Marymount University (LMU), JD in Corporate Mergers and Acquisitions / Import and Export, also paid by Xerox. I am a Board Member of the ELAC Alumni Association and a Member of the Alumni Leadership Committee of Pepperdine University with over 75,000 Alumni Members world-wide. Most recently in 2020, I was elected President of the Xerox Past and Retired Latino Employees Group. This organization now has over 325 members (and growing). The Organization is based out of Southern California. We will continue to fight for hiring more Latinos into top paying jobs within the High-Tech Industry.
