Yolanda's Story
It's been a long, long long-long-long road to Northern Virginia.
I live in Herndon, VA, a suburb of Washington DC, in house I share with three roommates. We're located next to a horse farm, so when I look out my window I can see the pasture. A half hour drive puts me in the heart of DC.
I don't have pets or children of my own, though I'm not predisposed to spend the rest of my life without either.
I have good friends and a large network of people here, so I'm content. I just celebrated my 30th birthday in November and was pleasantly surprised by the quantity and quality of attending guests, for which I'm grateful.
I've just recently gotten exclusive with someone, and it seems that we're moving into the realm of "serious" pretty quickly.
I'm teaching part-time for the moment and working on some side projects until I move on to the next adventure. Most recently I've come back to the area (VA) after spending almost eight months in the mountains of Western Maryland working at a wilderness therapy program for at-risk boys ages 12 to 18.
No, don't think summer camp, think "Holes" ... sort of.
So, I lived in the woods 24 hours a day, five days a week, with a bunch of screwed up teenage boys who reminded me a lot of myself way back when.
Prior to my experience as a teacher I was the Manager of Marketing and Communications for a national association, which I HATED, and before that, I was a journalist, (freelance and general assignment) in Loudoun County. So, I had the c...Expand for more
hance to cover some names, attend some big ticket events gratis and compete with the Washington Post. Journalism was the great joy in my life for several years, but frankly I don't miss what's passed. I'm saner and happier these days, I'm sure.
What else ... oh, LOL-I was arrested ... for racing on a public highway in a three-week old Mitsubishi Eclipse G4 that had been tricked out for speed. Don't ask, just know that it was a barrel of fun right up until I saw the lights in the rear view.
Probably the biggest event in my life since graduation, aside from the death of my grandparents and one of my best friends, was getting clean and sober five years ago. I don't drink, I don't smoke, and I don't do drugs--who knew :0)
School
Initially I attended Wells College, the sister school of Cornell University, after graduation. However I withdrew from school for medical reasons and came back home. By then I was left to shift largely for myself, and I did so. I received an Associates degree from Monroe Community College, then went on to get a BS from Brockport in Communications with a concentration in Journalism and a minor in studio art. I plan on pursuing my education further.
I'm now making plans to get a Masters in English/ Professional Writing and Editing Certification and teaching license.
