Yukio's Story
After graduating from SDUHS, I went to Whittier College. Graduated with a BA in Political Science in 1961. Stayed an extra year to get a CA General Secondary certificate. Began teaching high school math in Bishop, CA, in the eastern Sierras in 1962. Left in '65. Got a math teaching position in George Washington HS in San Francisco in 65, left in 67. During that time married a Bishop girl, Yvonne Springer.
Got a job at Punahou School, Honolulu, HI, in 1967, was divorced shortly after. Taught at Punahou until 1972. Went to Luther Seminary in St. Paul, MN, in 1972; interned in Japan (1...Expand for more
975-77); returned to Punahou in 1977, met and married Marilyn Grooms from Lynchburg, OH, at Prince of Peace Lutheran Church in Honolulu. Returned to graduate from Luther Sem in 1979.
Served a parish in Milwaukee, WI (1979-86). Daughter, Mariko, was born in Minneapolis in 1979; Son, Mits, was born in Milwaukee in 1981. Returned to Punahou in 1986. Taught Math, then became Chaplain in 2005. Retired in 2008.
In retirement, I babysit, serve as an associate chaplain at Arcadia Retirement Center in Honolulu, and am currently the interim pastor at Prince of Peace Lutheran Church in Waikiki.
