Yvette's Story
After completing high school, I went into the work force and worked for about 13 years as a Health Care Aide at Middlechurch Nursing home and Seven Oaks Hospital. I decided that I didn't want to do this for the rest of my life, as it was not challenging enough and the wages were very low.
I started my second career when I was 30 years old. I joined the Royal Canadian Mounted Police in December of 1996 and went to Regina, Sask. for six months training as a police officer. I graduated from the RCMP training academy in Regina, Sask., June 30, 1997. I did general duty policing at the following locations: Neepawa, MB., Gladstone, MB. and Portage la Prairie, MB. I then applied to a specialized section known as Forensic Identification Services. I am currently posted at the RCMP Headquarters on Portage Avenue, in Winnipeg, MB. , such as break & enters, recovered stolen automobiles, aggravated assaults, sexual assaults and all homicides. My job is to record the physical evidence found at a crime scenes through photographs, notes and sketches. I also dust for fingerprints and positively identify fingerprints to known criminals.
I never thought that I would be doing this when I graduated from high school. I see a lot of horrible things that are nothing like what they show in the movies. I have also been to a few northern Native communities and am shocked at how much poverty there is in our own Province. A lot of the Native communities don't even have running water or bathrooms with flushing toilets. There is no way that any of us would live like that. Although my job is like the TV show CSI, we do not have all of the "fake" computer software that they have on the show, and you can't find fingerprints on everything.
