Yvonne's Story
Life
Okay... I'm old. Not REALLY old... just old.
I have a son and he's graduated from college with an associate's degree in 2 and 3-D animation. (Too bad I couldn't talk Don Sypien into teaching another generation of my family!) He's appeared in several plays and is developing a following. He's now married and living somewhere in California.
I was married for nearly 29 years. My husband passed away in April 2004.
I was living in the Phoenix, Arizona area from October of 1979 until the Winter of 2005. And I have to admit... the smog and the traffic AND the heat were starting to fry what few brain cells I have left. (Hey! I have to blame it on SOMETHING!)
I have moved up to Alaska of all places! Can you believe it? (Neither can my family!) It's great up here and the moose are just too cute for words. Who knew?!?!
School
I remember a high school with no doors on the classrooms, carpet throughout, no gym, and an emergency airstrip. It was an open campus as well because we had adult students attending.
The vocational teachers were more like friends and the academic teachers were very cool. No English 101 for us! We had nine-week mini-courses on science fiction and supernatural. Mrs. Starker taught an excellent class on inte...Expand for more
rpersonal relationships.
Although everyone called the place Vo-Tech for short, we always proclaimed proudly that we were students of the Southern Nevada Vocational Technical Center. I still put S.N.V.T.C. down on the education portion of any job application I fill out. I love explaining to folks that I went to an extra special high school that had extremely high standards for its students. I was glad to find out on a recent visit, that today's students are expected to work just as hard as we did back in our day. It's great to know that some things never change.
One thing that has changed is the number of Hispanic students. I was but one of a handful of Spanish-speaking students at the time... but the current student body is nearly 50% Hispanic. Wow!!
College
I spent a few months at Durham Business College while I lived in El Paso, Texas. I was working at a Globe Department Store at the time. I remember Mr. Lee teaching a wonderful vocabulary class. This is also where I brushed up on my keypunch skills and learned touch ten-key. Wonderful people!
More recently, I attended Estrella Mountain Community College. I took several computer-related classes and some phys. ed. to keep in shape. Beautiful campus with really great teachers.
