Zell's Story

Life I grew up in North Miami. Attended William Jennings Bryan Elementary, Natural Bridge Elementary, North Miami Junior High School, North Miami High then transferred to Miami Palmetto Senior in my sophomore year. After graduating Palmetto Senior High I attended Miami-Dade Jr. College North Campus (wasn't a south campus yet). I took that infamous break from school and was drafted into the U.S. Army. After my dedication to Uncle Sam, as a Combat Paramedic, I came out and managed a Cement Plant for Lehigh Portland Cement Company for two years. After having my Plant dynamited while I was in it I thought it was time to leave and seek a new career. I then became a Law Enforcement Officer for the Miami Beach Police Department. As a motorcycle officer I got hit on I-95 in 1983 and was retired with a disability from injuries sustained from the accident in 1985. I was married in 1969 to Carole Cotton of Southwest High School (1963) which lasted for 5 years. I stayed single until 1983 when I met and married my present wife, Paulette Smith of Ft. Lauderdale High (1968). I have 3 fantastic step-children that I raised as my own and now have 9 grandchildren. We live in Summerfield, Fla. (just outside of Ocala) on a 10 acre gentlemans farm. We built a replica of an 1867 Victorian house in 1987 which we presently live in but intend on selling because of the maintenance on the farm. In 2003 I had a heart attack which got my attention and a second in 2005. Since that time I have changed my lifestyle, workout in the mornings, eat properly ( well most of the time). The doctor says I'm doing well. Ah! along came January 31, 2013 I was put in Moffit Cancer Center where I had my lower left lobe of my lung removed due t...Expand for more
o a carcinoid tumor. It is now 2015 and January I had my 6th and final CT Scan which proved to be negative and am now declared Cancer Free. My love for cars has not changed since high school and presently am building a 1937 Ford Rumble Seat Cabriolet with a Corvette engine. I have been a Real Estate Broker since 1988, work full time and have an Assistant that is my right hand, however once our house is sold I'm considering slowing down. maybe. I would love to hear from all my friends from Palmetto High, North Miami High, North Miami Jr. High, Natural Bridge Elementary and William Jennings Bryan Elementary. On that note, when we bought this 10 acres, unknown to me the owners son came over the next day and introduced himself (Jay Gwynn) and we discovered we had been friends from kindergarten through 5th grade when he and his parents moved away, small world huh? Well there's my life in a nutshell. As far as Hialeah High - I had a very dear friend who I stayed in touch with for years and lost contact. Berkeley Springs High had a very dear person that was a nurses assistant in Winchester Hospital that took very good care of my father until he passed away from cancer in 1977, she became part of the family until we all lost touch with her. I only remember her first name, Barbara, we called her "Elf" affectionately. Would love to see how she's doing. I have heard from many of you and went to my 50th Reunion last year for Palmetto High. Didn't make North Miami, gre up with many friends at North Miami. Well I'm still here and going strong, still in Real Estate in Ocala and a Top Producer, who says you can't teach an old dog new tricks. I hear from my ex-wife Carole Cotton often and is still my good friend.
