Greg's Story

I have been living in Alaska since 1967 after coming up here with the Army. I am a University of Alaska Grad and worked on my Masters at the University of New Mexico. I purchased my current property in 1978 and started building in 1980. It started out as a hole in the ground (basement), a wood stove and an outhouse. I re-married in 1984. Lovely, talented Susie. We have no kids. We met in a swing dance class I was teaching. I retired from State service in 1999 and have continued working on our home since. In the summer we work on the garden and house outside and in the winter we work on the inside. We do enjoy living in Fairbanks. Our home is situated on 2 1/2 acres in the hills about ten miles outside Fairbanks. Having built most of it ourselves, it is both an unusual design and style, especially for Alaska. Susie's garden surrounds our home and is the envy of even those from outside the state. Come look! I want to extend an invitation to all my old schoolmates to visit or at least contact me if your life's journey's and explorations bring you north. I hope our lives paths are ...Expand for more
able to cross once again. March 5, 2024 Greetings once again, A few more months have passed and we are once again approaching the end of the winter. Light is returning and the days are getting longer. We still have about 20” of snow on the ground. The sun is starting to do it’s thing on our new solar panels now that they are clear of snow and the sun is getting higher. Our winter has been fairly mild with only one major cold spell hitting the minus 40’s for about 10 days. No travel this winter and not sure when. I even got myself a new snowblower but have not gotten the opportunity to use it because we have only had about an inch and a half since the end of January. It is sad that I need to report that my brother Bob (class of ‘68) died on the first of this month and Susie’s sister died the first part of January. Much sadness going on right now. Susie and I are doing well and have begun to work on getting back to a normal routine. It will take a while. Send good thoughts. Thanks for checking on this. Drop a line if you are so inclined. All our best. Your classmate, Greg Zimmerman
