Aaron's Story

Life I am married to Margo Siegel (12/30/08) and am very happy! I am a Fire Captain / Paramedic for the Rural/Metro Fire Department and previously taught Safety / OSHA classes at Arizona State University (ASU). I also teach Forensics to medical personnel and Federal law enforcement agencies. I have lived in Phoenix, AZ since 1990 and recently (8/18/04) moved to Avondale. I enjoy attending Phoenix Coyotes Hockey games (better if Khabi was back!), movies and dining out. I am a Master Mason with the Thunderbird Lodge (#15) of F&AM. You can contact me at AChamney1 at cox dot net or AZFFCEP at america online dot com. Workplace My work desire began when I was quite young. Many people say they looked up to someone or looked at a profession with great admiration. I was no different; mine was the TV series EMERGENCY! This show, for those who never heard of it, followed the lives of two Los Angeles County Firefighter Paramedics. It depicted how the emergency field changed with the advent of Paramedics in the early 1970’s. For then on I knew I too would one day follow in their footsteps. During my senior year of high school, I got a jump on my future career and enrolled in an Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) program. This is the first of three steps to becoming a Paramedic. In December of 1982 I graduated my program and became the youngest EMT in my Provinces history (17). Throughout the EMT program and all the way up to graduation, while my friends went out and “lived it up” on the weekends, I drove 70 miles to the nearest “big” city and rode with the ambulance crews t...Expand for more
o gain more experience. Immediately upon graduation I began working in the ambulance industry. There were no Paramedics in the Province where I lived so I knew eventually I needed to move and improve on my skills and training. I remained here until 1990 when I did just that, moved 2000 miles away to Phoenix Arizona. In early 1992 I became an Intermediate EMT (step 2) and that December I completed my Paramedic program. I was working ambulance but to finish my goal I needed to become a firefighter as well. In the fall of 1993 I was certified as a Firefighter/Paramedic, I made it! I transferred from the ambulance side where I was a Field Supervisor/Paramedic to the fire department side of our company. Life was good! I increased my training to include Swiftwater Rescue, high angle/high rise rope rescue, ToxMedic and diver. I was teaching at a number of Paramedic classes and testing new recruits at the fire academy. As if I wasn’t busy enough, I took a side job at the County Morgue assisting in autopsies. I wanted to see first hand why some patients died and some lived. During this time I met one of my best friends, a FBI Agent who was in on a case. After some long discussions and many weeks of hard work, I designed a class for presentation to new (and seasoned) FBI Agents who dealt with crime scenes and the collection and preservation of evidence and what they could expect to see at an autopsy. The class was a success. I am currently the C Shift Captain on Engine 857 in our far east Mesa operations. My station is the 2nd busiest in our department for EMS and fires.
