Aaron "Ike"'s Story
I kicked around the Tulsa area until 1986, then joined the Navy as an electronics technician and headed out to see the world. They sent me to Naples, Italy at the end of 1987, and I loved it so much that when I got out of the Navy in 1992, I took a job as a DoD contractor with Motorola and stayed there. In early 1995, I went to work for AlliedSignal and continued to work in Italy for 2 more years. I followed that job back to Norfolk, Virginia at the end of 1996, and worked at Navy bases all over for a while, designing, installing, and upgrading military communications systems.
In August 2000, after 3.5 years of feeling 'not quite at home' in Virginia, I left my job at AlliedSignal to take a Senior Field Engineer position back 'home' in Naples, Italy. I am an on-site representative of Naval Informat...Expand for more
ion Warfare Center's Fleet Systems Engineering Team at the Navy Computer and Telecommunications Station, Naples Italy. My lovely wife, Trina, our mutt, Scrawny, and our sun conure, Solé, are living "la dolce vita" in Lago Patria! ;)
Now, after spending 32 of the past 35 years in southern Italy, we are purchasing a home on Grand Lake in Grove, Oklahoma, where we plan to live out our "golden years". That's still a couple of years down the road, but the reality of coming back home after spending my whole adult life in Italy has me reeling...
Update Dec. 2024: We wound up renting out our house in Grove and bought another one in Atoka and moved into it this summer. We're enjoying the quiet small-town life, but I may never quite get over the culture shock of moving back to Oklahoma after 34 years in Italy.
