Abby's Story

Life FAMILY: I have been married for 18 years to a wonderful man that graduated from one of our rival schools (Garfield). His name is Robert Campbell and is my absolute best friend. We have three beautiful girls. Jana is 22, has autism, and now lives in a nursing home. Carter is 16, a high school senior, and going to one of the top 25 magnet high schools in the country. Mattie is 15, a high school sophomore, and a cheerleader. We are the all-American family with a 3-story colonial, 8 acres, and a Labrador Retriever. CAREER: I didn't go to college right after high school, but I went to work for Fairfax County Government's Office of Management and Budget. I was the Director's executive secretary for a couple of years. Then, I went into Cosmetic Management for designer cosmetics. While I was working full-time in the cosmetic field, I began to take classes at Strayer University since it was easy to find classes to fit around my working schedule as well as my family. It took me five years to receive my Bachelors degree in Business. While I was going to school my first year, I changed professions totally since I was starting my family with Rob (I gave birth to two children while going to school full-time as well as working full-time). I needed a 9-5 job to keep my life steady, so I went into legislative affairs for a trade association (commercial real estate)... how I ended up there, I don't know. It was definitely different from the cosmetic world, but it was similar to working for the government. As I soon found out, it wasn't always steady, but it was interesting because I learned a lot about politics when I faired a "D" in high school's American Government! I worked some on Capitol Hill and was privileged to meet several members of Congress. I graduated and retired during the same year at age 30. I then, homeschooled my children through the 7th grade. Since my girls started attending public school and now live lives pretty much of their own, I decided to go back to school to get my certifications in Fitness Nutrition and Personal Training. I own my own company geared towards women called 911 Body ResQ. RESIDENTIAL: I stayed around the Manassas area (Bristow/Gainesville) until August 2005. Rob had been working in Fairfax for about 12 years. We decided that the traffic was taking up too much of our family time together, so we took a leap of faith and moved from our hometown while leaving our extended families and friends behind. We now live in the Charlotte, NC, area. It's a little country town (such as The Plains or Marshall, VA) and would remind anyone of the little town of Mayberry from The Andy Griffith Show. (Actually, Mayberry is not far from us.) We absolutely love it! SPIRITUAL: I don't believe in "religion" but a relationship with the One True God through Jesus Christ. I attended evangelical churches for many years until this past year. I don't believe that people must attend the 4 walls of a building to have a relationship with Almighty God. After all, it is a "personal" relationship. I believe God's two greatest commandments... to love Him with all our hearts, minds, souls, and spirits... and to love others the way we love ourselves. I base every decision and word in life on these commandments. FUTURE: I just take one day at a time and try to enjoy the life God has given me. I love people, especially teens. They seem to be the "lost" generation that hurts and is seeking for love and attention. Since I've been in NC, I've been "Momma" in my little town. With whatever teen that crosses my path, it is my goal to teach them that there is more to life than drugs, alcohol, money, and sex... to lead them in a positive direction to be effective servants for their community and for GOD. HIGH SCHOOL: My biggest crush was on Johnny Mosemak (who passed away in 1993). He and I would make plans for the future (of owning our own company and getting married), although it was just platonic. It seemed that when one of us was "really" ready for a serious boy/girl relationship, the other was already involved with someone else. However, we were such good friends that we always counted on each other to talk about troubles... even after high school. In my senior year, I had run away to Georgia to get married. Yet, Johnny and I still kept in touch through a pay phone (this was before cells). He talked me out of getting married to someone I hardly knew. I thought maybe we would finally have our chance when I came back, but it didn't happen. In 1988, I finally did have my chance with Johnny, but I turned him down. We lost touch in early 1993, and I didn't even know that he was gone until 1997 when I saw his name on a church Easter memorial listing. I am still deeply saddened to this day of his absence in my world. I didn't really have a teacher who inspired me the most from Osbourn High. I can't even remember my teachers' names! If I could do it all over again, I don't believe I would relive my high school geeky years. I am very happy about what God has done for me and my life throughout the years. I am very content with the person I have become. When I was 16, I worked at Roy Rogers on the corner of Route 28 and Liberia Avenue. I had a blast working there with many of our classmates (including Alton Corbin, Kelly Brusso, and Mike Spiller). Every so often (if we worked late), we would meet up with Robby Estep (God rest his soul) who worked right down the street at the Colonial Restaurant and go joy-riding. Since my parents were so strict, that was definitely a highlight. I loved hanging out with my classmate and neighbor friend, Bill Curran. He was a crazy dude at times, but we always had a blast! One time, my dad took my '65 Mustang show car (bought from Paul Oxley's dad) away from me as a punishment. He drove it to work at the Pentagon. My dad was smart enough to know that I might do something crazy, so he unplugged the spark plugs and locked down (chained) the hood. And, he was right! Bill and I skipped school that day and went down to the Pentagon parking lot with a plan! Fortunately for me (at the time), Bill knew just how to get the hood unlocked and fixed the spark plugs! That day, we stole my own car! After being such great friends with Bill, I had to eventually break his heart when he wanted more than just our wonderful friendship. I adore the memories I share with Bill, and I'm so happy to say that we are buddies again via phone and internet. My best girlfriend was Marci Ferguson (from the class of '85). We had a blast, as naive young girls, cruising the town and blasting our be-bopping musi...Expand for more
c in her little Fiat convertible on Friday and Saturday nights. I guess we thought we would get a boyfriend like that, but it never happened! (I still keep in touch with Marci, and she is doing great.) Other friends I absolutely adore to this day are Debbie Scott who took me into her home for several weeks when I was having family troubles, Shreve Orndorff (Packy's sister) who would make me cry with her lovely singing voice while we ate our lunch in the gym away from the big crowds, Mercedez Benz (who lived with Matt Waters) who I use to have deep talks with, Matt Waters who offered his parents' home as a teenage hangout, Monica Lenk who took me to dance classes which made me look a "fool," Michelle Moore who use to have talks with me about God, Linnie Brooks who would drive me crazy by stopping by my house at all times, and Monique Webb who I use to go to Georgetown with in my partying days after 18. COLLEGE: College was college. I didn't go to college until I was 24 years old... had to pay my own way and it was tough with working full-time, having a family, and producing a family. Strayer University gave me a wonderful opportunity because they offered classes around the clock. So... there were times that I took classes at 2 AM... 5 AM... AND pregnant on top of that. It wasn't the most pleasurable experience, but I received my bachelor's in less than 5 years. WORK EXPERIENCE: At 16 - flipping burgers at Roy Rogers on the corner of Route 28 and Liberia Avenue. I loved that job because not only was I making my own money, but I also had some great friends from school to hang out with there. Between 17-22 - had various jobs... secretarial... real estate... government subcontractors and contractors (Contel/GTE and Environmental Protection Agency)... Fairfax County Government Office of Management and Budget... cosmetics. From 22-25 - Cosmetic Management for designer cosmetics (Woodies in Tysons)... had some multi-million dollar accounts (top in the country). Then I had my own cosmetic boutique for a year... that didn't work out with not finding good people to work as well as having a family (hours were awful). From 25-30 - Legislative Affairs for a trade association (commercial real estate). I loved my job and had the great experience of working on Capitol Hill, talking issues with Members of Congress, and working with some of the most powerful business men in our country. My job required many hours (60-70), so I decided to retire at age 30 to be with my children. From 30-39 - homeschooled my children... renovated homes... military antiquing... community volunteering... having served as president, chairperson, and member of several community boards... worked with youth groups. From 39-Present - received certifications as a Specialist in Fitness Nutrition as well as Personal Training... started my own company called 911 Body ResQ... currently working on my online portion of the business. MILITARY: Only military antiquing. STORY WIZARD QUESTIONS I hope old friends remember me as being fun and caring. I always wanted to be a Rockette when I grew up. My family and friends thought that was a silly idea. As it turns out, they were right. I blow off steam by going to the gym to pump some weights and by getting the good ole' heart a pumping through some cardio exercises. I like to relax afterwards in a nice big bubble bath and a massage. ;) The wildest thing I ever did in school was skip a class with a couple of my girlfriends and go on the roof of one of the school buildings to sunbathe topless. If I'm going to work somewhere, I need to have my hair fixed, lipstick, and a good healthy lunch to be able to deal with the day-to-day. My hero is God. He gave His one and only Son to die in my place for all the wrongs that I have done. His name is Jesus. :) It seems that I have lived everywhere... Korea, West Virginia, Florida, the Azores Islands, Colorado, Mississippi, Virginia, and North Carolina. I have moved so much in my lifetime because I was a military brat. The one person from my past who I'd most like to see again is Johnny Mosemak. He was my best guy friend, and we had an infatuation with one another. (God rest his soul.) My obsessions include helping others... troubled teens, soup kitchens, and Habitat for Humanity. Life doesn't always turn out the way you expect. My biggest surprise was having cancer at 25 and being told I wouldn't live past 30. But, God had other plans! :) If I could improve my home, I'd remodel everything... in which I have and am doing now. My dream home would be on some secluded island. ;) I am a parent of 3 beautiful girls. I have learned that they are very loving humans when they are little, as well as being very independent and hurtful when they are teens. :( If I won $100 million, I'd give 90 percent of it to charity, then spend the rest on building orphanages, my own personal gym, and my own shooting range. To be truly happy, I would be on some secluded island relaxing with all those that I love. My current age is 42. When I was 12, I thought that people my age now would be very old. I was so completely naive. My best friend would tell you I'm the most compassionate person you'd meet, but people who don't know me very well would probably describe me as a snob. I love style and fashion trends. The weidest job I ever had was working at a shoe store part time for 2 weeks... all those stinky feet didn't cut it for me! YUK! I share my home with my husband and 2 of my beautiful daughters which I find all loving. I have a few trophies on my mantel. I was an All-Star softball player in middle school, and my trophies show for that. :) If I got one do-over, I would have "waited" for my husband. In 10 years, I hope to be a beautiful and compassionate person. I'm going to get there by loving people. :) My oldest close friend was Rod Via. He was nearly 80. We clicked from the first time we talked at church because we had so many of the same interests... God and eschatology. I loved going to his house eating pie and sipping hot tea while talking every week. (God rest his soul.) What about me would surprise everyone at my high school reunion? I believe it would be that I'm a totally different person... no longer self-absorbed and a partyer... but one who spends time helping others. A childhood memory I'll never forget is from the 2nd through 5th grade. One of my schoolmates was George Valentine. He had short black hair and blue eyes, and he loved me so much that he scared me. He chased me nearly everyday for 4 years during recess and after school just to try to kiss me. YUK!
