Adrienne's Story

Dear Classmates, Here is my, Adrienne Dunham Bernhard, update. I am now a Cajun/Texan. Ron, my husband, wanted to move out of Slidell,LA for years, but I kept saying no. I had family in Slidell. We raised our son in Slidell. I had many good friends in Slidell. I had a part-time job as a Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist (CRNA) that I loved. For 26 years we lived in Slidell. We had a beautiful house in a nice neighborhood. But then Katrina came. Although Katrina didn't cause much damage to our home, that Hurricane devastated Slidell with over 80 percent of the houses flooded. After two years, I realized that our area of the country would not and could not be fixed in my lifetime. So I finally agreed to move. We moved to Texas in June of 2007 to a wonderful community of 1144 homes. called Heritage Ranch in Fairview, TX. To live here, one member of the household must be at least 55 and no one under 19 is allowed. Of course, grandchildren are welcomed visitors. It's a really nice area. Plus, it's close to my stepchildren and grandsons in Dallas. Ron adjusted to our new home almost immediately, but it took me months to not feel sad. I did finally adjust, but it wasn't as easy at I thought it would be. Stacey and Brad (my stepchildren), and Brad's wife, Shelley, went out of their way to make us feel welcomed. For that I was very grateful. Ron retired in 2001 at the age of 59. He continues to love retirement and in July of 2007 at the age of 59, I decided to join him. I really had a hard time deciding whether or not to retire. But once I made the decision, I have had not one...Expand for more
regret. There is so much more to life than work! Sleeping past 5:00 AM is just the best! Ron plays tennis 3 to 4 times a week and serves on the Architectural Review Committee for Heritage Ranch. I now design simple websites for the people and committees of Heritage Ranch on a volunteer basis. I taught myself how to do this, but not without saying many bad words and wanting to smack the computer. Web design is very different from anesthesia. It helps me stretch my creativity of which I have very little. I walk 4 miles on most days and ride my bike several days a week. I am a member of the Heritage Ranch Health and Safety Committee and the Webmaster for their website. I also volunteer as an RN several days a month at the free health clinic near my home. Of course I do lunch with my new friends, have dinner parties, play cards, keep the grandsons on some weekends, etc. All these things keep me very busy. Life is good! On August 2nd of 2008, my 26-year-old son, David, married a wonderful young woman from Tyler, TX. This wedding was probably the best weekend of my life. It was joyous, fun, and just perfect. I just finished putting a simple website together for news about the Bernhards, BernhardNews.com Probably more than you want to know about us, but it was fun creating it. I know all of you remember me as being obese. Well, in my late 20s I managed to lose 90 pounds. Over the years my weight has gone up a few pounds here and there, but I've managed to keep 80 pounds off. It's a struggle everyday, but so worth it. Thank Goodness for Weight Watchers!!!!
