Adrienne's Story
Life
Greetings!
I am alive and well and, until July 2011, had been living in a suburb of Des Moines, IA since 1992 with my babe of a husband, Cedric. I spent most of my time volunteering for causes supporting women and children, like it was a full-time job. From April 2006, until July 2008, I served as the Executive Director of a non-profit organization whose mission was to support and offer programming to young women. It was the hardest, most rewarding work I've ever done. The 24/7 crisis management (with board of directors, 21 staff members AND service recipients) took its toll on my energy level so I went to work at a museum (big change, to work and exist in quiet enviroment).
In Sept. '08 I accepted this new, dream position as Director of Development and Marketing at the historic Fort Des Moines Museum and Education Center. It was indeed an inspiration and an honor working to preserve the history of U.S. military "firsts" in this nation, and the world. The museum chronicles and educates about the very first African American officers to be commissioned, in 1917, serving this country in WWI. The Women's Army Corp (WAC) began at the Fort in 1942, and over 60,000 women trained at the Fort to serve in WWII. I left in Feb. '10 to finish my Master of Science Degree in Adult Learning and Organizational Performance, with emphases in Human Resources Management and Training and Development. I graduated in May, 2010, and am deciding what I want to be when I grow up. :-) Currently, I am enjoying being a self-employed independent consultant, and professional volunteer. I have to be careful about this; it's starting to feel a little too enjoyable, I think.

very challenged neighborhood in the central City of Des Moines. Our purpose was to expose the children, grades K-5 to the Arts. Right now, we have arranged for the students to attend performances at the Civic Center of Greater Des Moines for only $1.00. How cool is that !
On Thursday nights, and on Sundays, I worked (volunteer) with my ministry partner to bring the Word of God to women (and their children) at a homeless/residential treatment facility in the city. This was a most rewarding commitment.
In June 2011, my husband recieved a promotion and a transfer to Wilkes-Barre PA. I joined him here on July 4, 2011. It's a NEW SEASON!!! More later as I immerse myself in a new chapter.
While there I received a job as Program Administrator for a Child Sexual Abuse (CSA) prevention program called "Stewards of Children." I had started doing this on my own, asa volunteer. The CEO of a nonprofit drug and alcohol treatment organization was at the training, and asked me to work for his organization. We have recently relocated to N. Carolina and my boss asked me to stay on until May 2013. I will commute back and forth until May, for a week at a time. What an honor it is to still represent Serento Gardens in this capacity!
I am blessed beyond measure to have a wonderful husband, no children, and no pets. Life in Iowa (via Chicago for eight years) was pretty peaceful and filled with blessings. I miss life near the BEAUTIFUL Poconos, but Southern hospitality is not so bad!
We get back to Milford at least twice a year to see Mom, Dad, Clay, Marty, and the rest of the family. I can't believe that 1981 was so, so long ago and look forward to seeing you at our next reunion.
Peace,
Adrienne
