Agnes's Story
My grammar school was St. Monica's in Yorkville. The school was closed quite a few years ago but the church remains. I was baptized, made Communion and Confirmation there, graduated from the school and was married in the church. When I was a student the school had 16 classes...8 for the girls and 8 for the boys, in different parts of the building...girls and boys did not share the same classrooms...thank goodness. It is my belief students do much better in a one-gender class. The school had mostly nuns, the Irish Sisters of Charity with a few lay teachers. cation was the best. After leaving St. Monica's I went to Julia Richman High School, also in Yorkville, an all-girls school, and Stuyvesant, an all male school, at the time, was our counterpart. There, too, we had wonderful teachers and a strict behavior policy. I worked after school for the better part of the four years finding jobs through the school's employment office. Great training for the future as I knew I was not going to go to college. All in all I would say I was fortunate to have had so many thoughtful and caring teachers.
