Alan's Story

Life After DGHS-North, I went off to Kansas to attend a small college (Southwestern)southeast of Wichita where I obtained a B.A in Biology. I also took a class at the neighboring St. John's college and had friends from there. They also attended some of our classes, and field trips. My junior and senior years I was President of Pi Delta Sigma, which had it charter cancelled a couple years ago. After college I came home for about a year and a half, and tried to find a job and ended up a (seven days a week) Radio Shack Manager in Lombard, and then Glen Ellyn. I came back to Kansas for a college friend's wedding, and decided to move back to the Wichita area, where I did different jobs for a while (including aerial photography)and then went out to Boeing (at a friend's urging)) to accompany my room mate applying for a job there. Turns out he didn't get hired, but I did (Sept. 1978), and stayed 26 years. This was not what I had originally had in mind for a career,as I had never taken any business courses. The job paid well, it utilized my strengths in the sciences, and it gave me good health insurance coverage. I got to travel domestically a little, and help push computer database designs for purchasing (actually helped bootleg one behind management's back)when computer software became viable as a means to organize information on all the airplane parts Wichita bought for Boeing. I had little to no idea that Boeing built commercial airplane fuselages in Wichita and ships them by rail to Seattle for assembly. In 1978, Boeing was hiring anyone with any Liberal Arts degree, and I was very lucky, indeed. Anyway, looking back, my knowledge of art,...Expand for more
as taught by George Pappas (during high school) , at DGHSN, seemed to be of at an equal level than that I'd found being taught at college to Art majors! In fact, when I got to college, I found the Art majors were using the very book we had used in high school. For more than a decade, I've also assisted a friend who owns a family owned camera shop, in building up supplies of cameras for "student photographers" (high school classes mainly) each year. We have a friend that worked at Boeing (and by the way, he reminds me, was the same guy that hired me), who fixed only certain cameras (which just happen to be the older manual SLR's which the store needed) which I usually buy broken on EBAY and sell to the store for the repairman to fix. That's sort of over with now, as digital cameras are just too good. Because I was laid off in June of 2005, I was able to spend quite a bit of time with my parents, which I couldn't have if still employed. I hope wherever you are, you're finding ways to adapt to the new economy, as we're past it's peak and now we all need to "hold on" to see what's around the next curve, or on the downslope of this hill. We had an exceptional time to be in the workforce. Wisdom ? Never scoff at what great items or treasures you can find at you local secondhand/thrift stores, or benefit sales, as in many cases, there's somebody somewhere else looking to buy such a thing ! I sort of look at it and an extended course in archaeology and and socialogy, seeing what people discard, or just don't have room for, in their lives. Many times, the things I find discarded , I can't readily identify out right, sell really well on eBay !

The clouds aren't quite as diverse right now in Wichita.
The clouds are doing body language northwest of Wichita ! Palms down warming the world ?
Northcentral and Northeastern Kansas keep getting "plastered" this evening by storms.
