Alan's Story
Did my senior year at Wakefield after transferring from military dependents high school in Germany.
Best remembered faculty were Coach Stein, Don Diffenbaugh and Miss Richmond. Ran track, indoor
and outdoor. Played some penny-ante poker with the likes of Jim Kiehle and Paul Ronka. Also played
hearts third period in the senior court. Political junkie; still am. Best friends were Russ Davis and
sophomore Gary Aronson from the track team. Thought Paul Ronka was the most likely to succeed.
After Wakefield went to Washington and Lee University, then the University of Washington when my
family moved back to Washington State. First job after college was with the Federal Government.
Got bored (and frustrated) after four years and resigned to enter a rabbinic seminary. Did not get
ordained, but did spend eight years in the field of Jewish education. Then realized that was no way
to raise a family and had a success...Expand for more
ful career as a financial advisor (stockbroker). Retired in 2002.
After all my life since high school as politically active, ran for county-wide non-partisan elected office
in 2004 and was elected. Now in my second term.
Like to travel. Have visited all fifty states. Been to most of Central and Western Europe and cruised
the Caribbean half a dozen times. Costa Rica, Mexico many times and a cruise from Chile back up
the South American Pacific Coast. Live in Olympia, WA, the State Capital. Get to California at least
once a year to visit a friend in San Diego and my nephew in San Francosco. Also get back to DC and
Virginia every year or so. Served a term on the Alumni Board at Washington and Lee and do some
recruting. Don't go back for nostalgia. Go back to pursue a couple of pet projects and visit with current
administrators, faculty and students I know. Attend alumni seminars on a wide varierty of topics.
