Alan's Story
Update September 2019. I retired from the Federal Trade Commission (staff economist) in 2015, and I stepped down from being Membership Chairman of the American Dahlia Society in 2018. I am now Chair of the Garden Dahlia Committee. I still grow and exhibit dahlias, compile and distribute weekly packets of Devrei Torah (by E-mail and print copies), run the late Maariv during winter months at our shul (Modern Orthodox), etc. Hannah keeps busy with classes and babysitting. Our son David manages around 15 attorneys at Social Security, and his wife Katrina manages the New York Life office in Bethesda, MD. Evan is Chief Nephrologist at Wright Patterson Air Force Hospital (Dayton, OH), teaches at two medical schools, and is on a committee to write a new curriculum for Wright State Medical School in Dayton, OH. David's son Sammy just started kindergarten, and Lucas (age 3) is in daycare. Evan's wife Heather is home schooling their sons, Shlomo (age 7) and Yosef (age 4) -- dual curriculum (English as well as Hebrew). I have started raising a few dahlia seedlings, and my first one is due for release in spring 2020. Hannah and I look forward to another reunion -- hopefully before long. If you come to the DC area, contact us. Look up Alan & Hannah Fisher (no street address, in Rockville, MD) for our home phone number, or search for "Alan Fisher" and the word "Dahlia" to find my address and E-mail all over the Internet.
Previous posting -- still relevant -- see below.
After graduating from UCLA, I went west for my Ph.D. in economics (Berkeley). I taught opera and economics at Cal State Fullerton from 1973-75 and then moved to the Orient to work as an economist at the Federal Trade Commission. I retired this year and just finished cleaning out my office. I met and married my wife Hannah while in the DC area. We celebrated our Double Chai anniversary last year by sponsoring Kiddush luncheons at our 2 shuls. Our older son, David, and his wife Katrina are expecting their first child on June 10. If we are not at the reunion...Expand for more
, the reason is that there would be a bris during the few days when we are due at the reunion. David is an attorney for Social Security in DC. Katrina works for NY Life Insurance Co.
Our son Evan attended medical school at the U of Alabama and has completed 2 years of a residency in internal medicinie at Wright Patterson AF Base (Dayton, OH). (The Air Force paid for medical school, so he will be in the Air Force for the next several years.) Evan plans to do a specialty in nephrology (kidneys), although he may change his mind again about specialty. His wife Heather is from Baltimore and had a career doing alterations for clothing for Orthodox women who wanted fashionable but modest clothing. She now takes care of their 22 month-old son, Shlomo Peretz ("Sammy").
Hannah retired from her job as an attorney for the Patent & Trademark Office 2 months before Shlomo was born. She takes an occasional legal case for victims of employment discrimination but otherwise takes art and writing classes.
I have been Membership Chairman of the American Dahlia Society for more than 20 years and have the largest dahlia farm in Rockville, MD. I ran a Mincha and (in the winter) Maariv minyan at the FTC for around 23 to 24 years until the FTC decided to move out of the neighborhood. The final service of this minyan was June 2, 2014. I am active at 2 synagogues in Potomac, MD and do various volunteer activities, primarily related to running services.
Hannah and I look forward to attending the minyan and hope that the new baby's birth/bris dates do not cause us to cancel. Update: Baby Boy Fisher came early -- Sunday, June 8. Bris will be June 15, so we expect to be with our old(er) friends on June 22.
The photo shows Hannah and me around 2001 in a dahlia garden in Everett, WA.
Classmates won't let me share my contact info, but do a Google search on "Alan Fisher" and "dahlia" and you will find me easily. Also, go to the American Dahlia Society web site and select membership to get my E-mail.
