Alan's Story

I started school at Rowland School. I skipped about half of kindergarten because I didn't see any reason to go to school just to play. Anyway, I was in Miss Tanimura's 1st grade ('61-62), Mrs. Fox for 2nd, Mrs. Poduska for 3rd, and Miss Lepo for 4th (although I don't remember her). We moved to Fullerton in june of 1965 and I went to Ford Elementary were I was in Mrs. McGraw's 5th grade and Mr. Buster's 6th grade glasses. Then off to Wilshire Jr. High from 1967-'69. I had my 8th grade year book for some time, but lost it somewhere during a move. Next I went to FUHS from 1969-1973, where I was on the wrestling team and took a lot of english and art classes, especially photography.I also was found of history and took 3 years of german. Next, I crossed the street to Fullerton College, but was so bored with it that one day, after class, I was sitting on a bus bench and decided I needed achange. I immediately walked down to the Army Recruiting Station, and took the oath on 18 OCT 1973. I left for Basic on 4 Jan 74 at Ft. Ord, CA. After my advanced training as a field wireman, I was given orders assigning me to the 502d ASA Gp in Augsburg, W. Germany. there, I transfered to the M.P. platoon After about a year. After I got out I came back to Fullerton and went to college from Jan 1977-Dec 1977. I guess I needed to to run some more, so I reenlisted as a medic and was off again. I was retired for medical reasons in 1987.I was at ft. Lewis,WA (I pulled some strings to get there!)and ...Expand for more
settled down with my family, first in Puyallup, then in Auburn, WA. In 1997, my wife divorced me and became my "X". I started going to church again, and taking life more seriously. One of my friends, Ruth, cornered me after church one morning and asked me if I thought I might ever want to get married again (...she had this sister who need a man, you see...) and I said, "If God wants me to have a wife, He'll send me one." Welll.... about a year later, I married the love of my life! She lived here in Salem, OR and I was still in Auburn (250 miles) some we spent a lot of time on the phone and internet.Every other weekend or so, I'd drive down to see her. I'd spend the days with her and the nights at Motel 6. When we got engaged, we set our wedding for October, But all that driving back and forth and sleeping in a motel got old and was a drag, so we decide to run off to Reno over Labor Day weekend and get married. We still had the October wedding for the sake of our friends and families, but I still lived in WA until the end of Sep.(I gave my boss a months notice. when I told him why, he said,"Why don't you make her move up here!" It's nice to be appreciated!) So here I am, in Salem,OR, with a wonderful wife, three cats, a Boston Terrier, a really big Lab/Irish Wolfhound named Murphy. and a garden. There's been lots of ups and downs, but I am now a very happy (and very fortunate) man! Side note: While I was in the Army, I suffered a TBI, so my memory is not always great.

Slow down and enjoy the journey. 2018 has reminded me that when it is our time to leave this body no one can stop it. We have one life to live. The material things we invest in are left behind only to be discarded. Life is
