Albert's Story
Life
After high school, vacationed in Europe, then joined the Navy. Served aboard U.S.S. Coral Sea CVA 43 in Viet Nam between 1967 and 1970,visited countries in the Far East and down under. Attended UCLA, graduating 1975. Worked on Masters degree in Biology , Masters in Cell Biology at CSUN, then attended medical school at St. George's University, Grenada, WI. graduating 1983. Interned in New York, then did residency at UCLA San Fernando Valley Program from 1984-1986 and continued there in a clinical fellowship in Nephrology until 1988. Private Practice 1988-89, now practicing Medicine, sub specializing in Nephrology with the Southern California Permanente Medical Group in Lancaster, Panorama City and Woodland Hills Kaiser Permanente Medical Centers. Married Meredith Elizabeth Rodert (Grant High 1971), have two children, Brian and Kristin.
Workplace
After getting out of the Navy in 1970, I went to college, grad school, then Med School, graduating in 1983. Internship and fellowship lasted another six years and in 1988 went into private practice for a year before realizing it was not the type of practice I had envisioned. I left and joined the Permanente Med Group (Kaiser Permanente) and have never looked back.
Military

loomed ever closer. Attended basic training at Naval Training Center in San Diego and was sent to Electricians School at the same base, until May 1967. I went aboard U.S.S. Coral Sea CVA 43, A Midway Class aircraft carrier on 6 June 1967 and 6 weeks later was on my way to the Tonkin Gulf. I spent three and a half years aboard her and made three tours to Southeast Asia, with ports of call in Hawaii, Japan, Philippines, Hong Kong, Singapore, VietNam (Da Nang)for a few hours, and Australia. I counted the days until I could get out, but now I miss the old gal as she was decommissioned and sold for scrap about 10 years ago. She was the best ship in the Navy and I, as well as anyone who served aboard her, will forever miss her. I left Coral Sea on 7 August 1970. I went back aboard a year later while she was at Alameda Naval Air Station, and never saw her again after that.
I still keep in contact with shipmates that I served with and with people I met overseas. It was a great experience and would recommend it to any one who hasn't made a career choice in life. I had planned to study architecture before my tour of duty in the Navy, but chose to go into Medicine after I left the Navy, primarily as a result of my experiences in VietNam. I would have done it all over again.
