Albert's Story

Life (Click on the photo to the left to get a larger photo of me "Then [in 1964] and "Now" [in 1998].) I was born in Scott SK and moved to Loon Lake SK in 1944. I have nothing but great memories of my childhood as from 1949 til 1960 my family lived at the summer resort at Jumbo Beach. I took junior high in Edmonton and high school in N. Battleford. Attended 2 years of a 3 year Student Psychiatric Nursing Course in N.B. where I met Karin Longlitz, the mother of my children. I became employed with Environment Canada as a Weather Observer in 1964, got married in 1964, had a daughter in 1966, sons in 1967 & 1969. Worked in Saskatoon, Wynyard, Regina, Prince Albert and Resolute Bay NWT. Retired early in 1995. Divorced in 1983, have been in long term relationship with Gail Seymour since 1981. Moved to Herbert Sask in 1999. Have been in every province and territory in Canada with the exception of the Yukon, (and that is next on the vacation list). Have dipped my foot in the Pacific, Arctic and Atlantic oceans (in that order). I am an enthusiast of music, camping, canoeing, woodwork, photography, and computers. I have 5 grand-daughters, one grand-son, 3 step granddaughters, one step grand-son and one step great grand-daughter. I am a happy relatively well-adjusted guy with a good sense of humor and a huge love of life. School I began school in Loon Lake SK in 1949. My favorite teachers in elementary school were Miss(Alvina)Swenson and Mr. (Angus) Addley. In 1955 we moved to Edmonton and I attended McCauley Jr. Highschool from grade 7 to grade 9. We then moved to N. Battleford and I attended the N. Battleford Collegiate Institute (NBCI) for grades 10 thru 12. I graduated with honors in June 1961. My favorite all time teacher was Miss Swenson from Grades 4 & 5, but other noteable teachers were my Typing teacher in Grades 7 & 8 Mr. Barstow, Miss Flink, my Gr. 7 music...Expand for more
teacher, and Miss Fletcher my English teacher in high school. Also Mr. Thurn who taught chemistry in high school and also taught boxing after school hours. Workplace I worked for my Dad in our family business at Jumbo Beach SK, stocking shelves, doing dishes, delivering baking, yard work, serving customers at the lunch counter, and was DJ for dances, and janitor afterwards. (Summers of 1949-1960). I sold papers on 96th & 97th Streets in Edmonton in 1955 & 1956, set pins at a bowling alley in 1957 & 1958. Had a paper route in 1958 in N. Battleford and set pins in a bowling alley in 1959. Pumped gas, did service jobs and washed cars at Holtet's Esso Service in 1959, 1960 and 1961. Was a Student Psychiatric Nurse at the North Battleford Psychiatric Hospital in 1962, 1963 and spring of 1964. I was hired by the Atmospheric Environment Service in May of 1964, was trained in Ottawa, posted to Saskatoon, did a tour of relief in Wynyard in 1965, back in Saskatoon til Oct. of 1966, moved to Regina and worked at the Regina Forecast Office until July of 1970. (I drove taxi part-time for Moores Cabs in 1968 and 1969). I took Advanced Meteorology in Cornwall ON in 1969 as well as a Presentation Course which led to a promotion in July of 1970 to the Prince Albert Weather Office where I worked until 1995, (with a 6 month tour of duty in Resolute Bay NWT from Mar.1 1988 to Sept. 8 1988). In June of 1995 I took early retirement. After retiring I took a job pumping gas at Canadian Tire in Prince Albert (1997). Then I worked at the Herbert Sports Complex in the winter of 2001 as Maintenance person. In July of 2003 I started work for the Town of Herbert as Water Meter Reader. In October of 2003 I was convinced by local people to let my name stand for the Mayor's position. I lost my job as Water Meter reader when no other candidate came forward. My current term ends in October of 2006.
