Alberta (Bert)'s Story
Hello,
I have been in the Arlington area for 20+ years now. We moved here after living in Europe (England for 5 of those years), Houston 1 year), Nebraska (9 years), Kansas (15 months), and then to Arlington. Before all of that I lived in Maryland for 2 years. Life has been good for me and my family. We have had our ups and downs but all good things came from it all. I came here and starting teaching tennis after teaching in Houston, Nebraska,& Kansas. Started out working for the City of Arlington Parks and Rec as a Tennis Pro and on to running the Tennis Camp at UTA for 11 years to handling my own Tennis Business. I later was talked into working for the Dallas Tennis Association and that is where I have been since. During that time after a 12 week period I was asked to come into the office to help run the Jr Rec Dept and shortly afterwards I became the Director of that Dept. I run a Nationally Known program called NJTL Slam Jammers. It has won National Chapter of the Year for the years of 2004. 2005. 2007. they changed the rules because no one had won it as many times as myself so I have to sit out for two years if I win it! smile.. I have receive Texas tennis PTR Pro of the year in 2008, I received the USTA Texas Lloyd Sessions Educational and Merit Award for 2008, and I was so honored to be Inducted into the Texas Black Sports Hall of Fame along with The Dallas Cowboys Tony "The Thrill" Hill, WNBA Houston Comets Cynthia Cooper,Oakland Raiders AARON WALLACE, Dallas Cowboys KEVIN WILLIAMS,Miami Dolphins RICHMOND WEBB, VICKI MINOR Swimming, ARTHUR JAMES, Football- East Texas State University, EDWARD ROBY Coach - Austin ISD. It was a very exciting night and I will be forever grateful to have been selected with such a fine group of individuals.
I have a family made up of two kids one daughter Rhonda and one son Craig. Rhonda has 2 boys Jared (15) ...Expand for more
and Damon (13). They are both fine boys and they are making me so proud of them. Rhonda work in the High Tech Industry and travels extensively out of the country, Criag played some professional football after college and now is in the Movie Industry on both sides some acting and some Producing. He is not married and no children. My husband is from Cleveland Ohio and is now retired one year from Postal Service and has been retired from the US Air Force.
My program has 400 to 600 kids in the Fall and in the Spring and runs between 1500 to 1880+ in the summers. I run 48 sites in the summer months and 12 to 13 in the rest of the year. Because of the work I have been doing in the Dallas Area , the Dallas Parks and Rec have partnered with us to put in the first Public Quickstart Tennis Courts in the entire state of TEXAS, our goal is to have them in place by early Spring or for sure ready to go by summer 2010. this is totally awesome and we cannot wait to have our kids hit the new courts!!! :)
I live still of course in Arlington but my office is in Addison (North North Dallas).. quite a drive, but then I drive some 75 to 100 miles a day. I also work as a Area Co-ordinator for USTA TEXAS SECTION for all of Dallas County/ Collion County/ & Grayson County. That is where I spend time working to teach the PE Teachers in All The School Districts how to teach a Tennis Unit in the PE Classes. I have many workshops to helo them and also I do all the Teacher In-Services in the areas. So much for me you have got to be tired by now! Thanks for listening... Bert Cole
Well to update the information... we got those courts put in and now have the largest QST Center in the nation! I am so proud of those courts! It was a beautiful grand opening and I had the pleasure of having Past Mayor David Dinkins of New York City present!!! It was great! over 500 people attended!
