Alex's Story
Life
So I graduated from the U of I. I managed to get enough scholarships to graduate without student loan debt, although I had to work throughout school at a laboratory to make ends meet (especially when dating; girls are expensive).
Now I am an associate scientist for Abbott Nutrition. At the same time, I'm finishing my master's thesis at Ohio State University.
In June of 2008 I married the girl I'd been dating since September of 2002. She's a statistician for Victoria's Secret. We met during swing dancing, and not that crappy country swing either; I'm talking about the original swing (Lindy, Bal, Charleston).
I "worked" for a government research lab for a year; that was fun. Where else can I get $9/hour to play racquetball thrice a week? Most recently, I worked for Nestle, a nice place to work, but Abbott made a great offer so that's where I am now.
School
Once again, I'll just answer the questions in the prompt:
My biggest crush? As if I would divulge THAT tidbit on a public website (although most guys in the class of '01 shared the same crush).
Which teacher inspired me most? Shoot, that's difficult...I'd say it was a joint effort by Mr. Bedell and Mrs. Hurst.
If I could do it all over again, would I? No way.
Funniest moment? When Richard recorded the infamous "I am the Man" bit.
Happiest moment? Friday nights with the guys at the Rulien house.
Craziest moment? I didn't have any of those in high school.
College
I'll just answer the questions in the prompt:
I have had several "unique" roomies. My first painted his toenails pink. He was my roomie for one week. After that, I lived with my cousin; he was the only normal one with the exception of his apparent narcolepsy. Then I lived with a couple of guys from Mtn. Home. Nei...Expand for more
ther were normal, but it was a good time. Now my roomie is my wife and three dogs.
Classes went well, especially the food science courses. No, that doesn't make me a chef. We make the food you buy at the store, and we are legion.
I took a few classes over again: Swing dance because it was so fun and Statistics because I got a C in it the first time (oh yeah, I earned an A the 2nd time).
Dr. Edwards and Dr. Culbertson were the best profs I had, although Dr. Gandy, Dr. Coffman, Dr. Shuttleworth, and Dr. Johnson were all very good.
It's amazing I stuck with Spanish and received a Minor. I only had 3 good teachers out of 6.
My biggest crush in college was Lue, but she was LDS so it was just an idea.
My craziest moment in college? Luckily, despite being officially hammered, I remember being used as the pole while two girls did a stripping pole dance ON ME.
My funniest moment in college the incident involving duct tape while still living on Lindley Hall. If Carl would have just emerged before 1:00 pm...
My happiest moments in college all involved Lynne.
OSU is a huge campus, and it has it's ups and downs. At least the football team wins more than it loses. The food science department is a tense place to be right now, but there are some good professors.
Workplace
During my first and second summer breaks, I took classes and did not work. During my 3rd year, I took a job at a government research facility (nothing classified, but still interesting). I was a TA and research assistant at OSU. Then I interned with Nestle, then I was hired at Abbott Nutrition.
Military
What, do you think I'm crazy? I've had three knee surgeries; I can barely jog without swelling. Maybe if our country were DIRECTLY threatened by something other than an IDEAL.
