Alexander's Story

Howdy everyone! Went into the Navy in May 1969. Ended up getting choice of duty station after completing Electronics Tech School. Then on to Naval Air Station North Island in San Diego, CA. Spent two years there at AOE division and saw three of the Apollo Capsules during that time! Reenlisted while at North Island and qualified for Electronics Class B School (equivalent of a AA degree in Electronics Engineering). Graduated ET "B" school and was sent to Cryptology School at Mare Island In San Francisco. Completed Cryptology School in 1974 got a TS clearance and headed to Subic Bay the Philippines to Duty as the lead electronics petty officer and nuclear security guard aboard the USS Kirk FF1087. First cruise we escorted USS Kitty Hawk to the Persian Gulf to put on and air show for the Shah of Iran, if you can believe that. The next cruise my ship went covert and we ended up playing a major role in the evacuations of Cambodia and South Vietnam (That covert part kept our crew from receiving several deserved awards until Rear Admiral Thomas hand us our Vietnam and Expeditionary service medals at a Ships Association Reunion in Washington DC In 2007) South...Expand for more
Vietnam evacuation was the high lite of my Naval career. I volunteered to go in country and escort and old LST505 with 1800 south Vietnamese refugees out to the Philippines. National Public Radio did a 6 part TV series on USS Kirk and her role in the evacuation and we have a starring role in Rory Kennedy's documentary "The Last Days Of Vietnam . Spent another year and a half aboard USS Denver LPD-9. After 8 years and 3 months I left the Navy and took several electronics mechanic positions at various companies in San Diego before being offered double my salary to go to work for Hughes Aircraft Company. That is where I met my lovely wife of almost 30 years now. After 22.5 years at Hughes Aircraft Company/General Motors Hughes Electronics/Raytheon (that is a whole other story of unique experiences) I retired in 2004 and my Dear wife retired in 2010. .We live in a nice little retirement home in Cottonwood, AZ. Have 11 grand children and a quiet life, except when the G Kids are here or we are back in California visiting there. We are planning on traveling now that our senior care taker duties have ended with the passing of my wife's father this past July!!
