Alfonso's Story
My name is Alfonso Garcia, I was born in a small town in Mexico called Huandacareo, Michoacan in the South Side of Mexico. I was raised my first 11 years of my life in Mexico. I was brought to the United States by parents in the year 1997. I had difficult time on the first couple of months in this new country. Everything was very different from the little town in Huandacareo. I knew if i wanted to be successful in this country i needed to learn the language as soones possible. My first year at school, i had a person translate everything from school to me because i could not understand anything that was say in the classroom. I begin to understand a little bit of english after the first year. I when to Herrera School from grade 4 up to junior high where i graduated on may 2000. From there i continue my education to high school were i register to attend South Mountain High School. I was really scared to go to that school because; i was the only person from that school to go to that high school. I did not what to expect because i was having difficult time speaking the language correctly. My first year at high school i took anything but ESL classes to get confidence with my speaking and writing. I was really excited about the progress with my second language and meeting wonderful people too. During my four years at south Mountain i meet so many won...Expand for more
derful friends and teachers. I attend high school from 2000 until 2004. The only thing that i regret that i did not participate in school was playing sports. I did not know what i was going to be doing after high school. I wanted to go to college but my parents did not have the resources to pay for my tuition. I was very happy to learn that that sense i was in the top 15% of my graduating class of 2004, i was eligible to receive a scholarship for me to attend college for my first 2 years of college. I enrolled to South Mountain Community College after graduating from high school. I when to SMCC from 2004 until 2007 when i graduated with an AA degree. I'am currently a student an ASU West Campus; I'm working on my baclelor's degree on science on Criminology and Admistration of Justice. I'm expecting to graduate from ASU on December 2009. I am very proud of everything that i had accomplished up to this point of my life. I could not have done without the support and encouragement of my parents, family members as well as teachers. I still have many goals that i want to accomplish some time in the future. Some of my goals are to find the girl of my life, raise a family, attend and graduated from law school, own my own business of law. I know if i continue to work hard as i have work up to this point, i can accomplish anything i put my mind into it.
