Alfredo's Story
Life
I moved to Orange Park, Fl on 24 Dec, 2005. This move was done for many reasons but primarily because I was at a point in my life where I was "starting over" and I figured since that can be done anywhere, I was going to do it close to my daughter.
I live with my two dogs; Pincho the 7 year-old Yellow Lab and Shelby, the 8 year-old "Puerto Rican Terrier" (MUTT), in a nice house 1/2 a mile from the hospital where I work as an E.R. Tech. I also maintain my skills as a paramedic by volunteering in the Jacksonville Emergency Medical Auxilliary division of the Jacksonville Fire & Rescue Department. Currently my plans are to remain here until my daughter graduates from high school and then return to New England, probably New Hampshire, where I trained as a Paramedic and can work in the field I love so much and live in a place with 4 seasons that each last an equal amount of time. Even here in North Florida, winter lasts 5 days or so with fall and Spring adding up to about 2 weeks total. The rest, HEAT, HEAT, HEAT
There is always a place to crash and a hot meal at my place for a friend in need. If anyone is in the area, let me know.

School
First became an EMT (Basic) in 1987 while stationed at Naval Medical Clinic, Mayport Florida. In 1993 I graduated with honors from the Eliott Hospital Paramedic Program in Manchester, NH. While stationed at the Rodman Naval Station in Panama City, Republic of Panama, I completed my certification as an instructor in the armed forces. This certification is similar in length and content to a teaching certificate.
In between those formalized training courses I have attained the level of instructor in numerous courses within the scope of Emergency Medical Services (EMS). A few of those would be Advanced Cardial Life Support, Pediatric Advanced Life Support, Geriatric Emergency Medical Services, Pre-Hostipal Trauma Life ...Expand for more
Supoprt and several more.
I recently enrolled at St. john's River Community College and an trudging through the pre-requirements for RN. Once I complete RN, I'll have 5 more classes to take and I'll have an AS in my minor which is a 2 year degree in EMS.
Workplace
I'm currently employed at a Level III Emergency Department in my local hospital. I work as an E.R. Technician and although I'm not able to perform many of the skills a Paramedic can OUTSIDE the hospital, it does not prevent me from using my brain and experience and for the most part have some contribution to the care of critical patients.
Military
I RETIRED from the U.S. Navy on February 29, 2004. I retired an E-6, Hospital Corpsman First Class, after 20 years and 2 days of service. For those that wonder why I did not ever get promoted to Chief Petty Officer or beyond, the answer is actually quite simple. I decided to become very good at one thing and not be mediocre at many. With the exception of an instructor tour in Panama, once I became a Hospital Corpsman, I became totally devoted and consumed with Emergency Medical Services. In those 14 years I worked in Emergency services (17 total as a Hospital Corpsman) I upgraded 2 ambulance service department from a service that provided the most basic and antiquated services possible while still maintaining a current standard of care to services that provided Advanced Life Support service, with paramedics performing skill up to par with some of the top Rescue Services in the Nation. In one command, Naval Medical Clinic, New Hampshire, before we started the service upgrade, our EMS service was ranked LAST in the New Hampshire Seacoast in a group of 64 services MOSTLY civillian. When our service was fully functional, in 1993, The local Trauma Center awarded us the Achievement Award for the best EMS department in the NH Seacoast.
If I had to do my career over would I take the same path?
