Allen's Story
Life
I've been living in Atlanta for the past 21 years. Moved here to be an assistant sports editor at The Atlanta Journal. Over the years, had other editor titles but about 10 years ago I discovered I missed writing most of all so I traded in my office for a laptop and a sportswriting job. The paper is now the Journal-Constitution. I cover NASCAR a good portion of the year, with some college and pro football and major feature stories.
I had begun my writing career at the late, great Miami News, then was executive sports editor of the Fort Lauderdale News (another paper that died, but don't blame me.) This career path was started on the West Miami Jr. ...Expand for more
High Star, then the Miami High Times.
One of my career highlights came in 1996, while covering the Olympic Torch Relay across the country for a week. My first day on the assignment, a media assistant walked up to me and said ''one of the runners didn't show up, wanna carry the torch?'' So there I was, jogging through the streets of Waterloo, Iowa, carrying the torch as thousands lining the sidewalks applauded while wondering 'who the hell is that guy?'
I have two daughters, one a junior at the Univ. of Ga., and a freshman at Georgia State.
I've never made it to a reunion but have returned home to take in an MHS-Gables game (it ain't like the old days).
