Allen W.'s Story
Life and Family
I was born in Richmond, CA, and grew up in Aberdeen Washington. I graduated from Aberdeen (Weatherwax) High ('66), GHC ('68), the UW ('70) and Willamette U (Law '73)(see "School Porfile" and "Work Profile"). I married Marsha DeBay (AHS '68, and sister of classmate Greg DeBay) in 1971. We moved to Salem for law school, she got a teaching job and we just never left. We have 4 children, and 8 grandchildren. Our two oldest daughters are living in California. One is a journalist living in Santa Cruz. The other teaches biology in San Jose. Our son was in the Oregon National Guard and served in Iraq and Kuwait with Operation Iraqi Freedom. In 2005 he was again deployed, this time to New Orleans to assist the victims of Hurricane Katrina. For that he was given the Army Achievement Medal. After working in pharmaceutical sales, he's now studying to become a PA. Our youngest daughter is married to a Major in the US Army, so they move around.
School
I attended kindergarten at Washington School in South Aberdeen. Grades one through eight were spent at St. Mary's school, and I attended Miller Junior High for the 9th grade. My high school years were at Weatherwax High in Aberdeen and I graduated in 1966. The "then" photo is my high school graduation picture.
College
After high school, I enrolled at Grays Harbor Community College in Aberdeen, where I was active in music, drama, thespians, and student government. My sophomore year I was student body vice president. After graduation in 1968, I went to the University of Washington where I majored in poli...Expand for more
tical science and Soviet Affairs/Far East (double major), graduating in 1970. I was accepted at Willamette University College of Law in Salem, Oregon and graduated with a J.D. in 1973.
Work History
After graduating from Willamette U College of Law in Salem, OR, I was hired by the Oregon Department of Justice as an Assistant Attorney General. In 1977 I became legal counsel for the State Accident Insurance Fund (workers' comp), and eventually became General Counsel and V.P. for the claims and legal departments. In 1984 I entered private practice with the firm of Lindsay, Hart, Niel and Weigler in Portland, and 2 years later formed the partnership of Scheminske & Lyons, LLP., and continued the defense of workers' comp cases in Oregon and Washington. When my law partner retired, I formed the firm Lyons Lederer, LLC, from which I retired September 29, 2017.
Currently
Marsha retired in 2015 from Blanchet Catholic School after 20 years. She had been a math teacher, and was mid-high vice principal at the time of her retirement. With my retirement, we now have more time to travel and visit our kids and grandkids. I remain active in our parish, both in the music ministry and as a member of the Administrative Council. Marsha and our Brittany Spaniel "Hootie" are a therapy dog team, visiting patients in hospice care, nursing homes, and hospitals. I also spend more time than I should on "Smule," a karaoke app for phones and tablets (check it out: Smule Sing! in your app store), singing with people from all over the world.
