Amy's Story
Life
Alright, I guess whoever pays to read these wants their money's worth, so why not fill this out... I am currently living at 7000 ft on an active volcano on Maui, Hawaii. It's great to get to the beaches & it's much different from most of the mainland in lots of ways (Hawaiians are a culture & ethicity by themselves), but it is easy to get tired of being isolated on an island in the middle of the Pacific & the altitude (I work at 10,000 ft some days) wears on me. And I actually miss the humidity of the midwest!! I work for Haleakala National Park in the interpretation dept- which is basically researching & presenting educational programs (for instance, I'm currently working on a presentation about the beliefs & lives of ancient Hawaiians). Working in a National Park is beautiful- sunrise atop Haleakala is really uplifting. I finished up at Mizzou a couple years ago with BA degrees in psych, anthro, & a minor in women's studies. I plan to go back to school for my PhD, but I'm still trying to decide on a program- when I was working in DC on ...Expand for more
an internship, I started volunteer work for an international women's rights group, so I'm excited to see where that will go (for instance, I'm currently working on an anti-gender violence project)- I'm hoping they'll fund some additional education, since I want a career in gender issues & feel very passionately about stopping human trafficking. Um, let's see... as far as hobbies go, I don't have a whole lot of time right now because I'm involved with the SCA (Student Conservation Association)internships- how I got this job- so I'm bouncing around from place to place. I'd like to learn scuba diving, photography & learn more about astronomy (the Milky Way stretches across the entire sky on a clear night here). I started rowing in college & I'd like to continue with that as well. I like trying new sports & staying active & am looking forward to watching the Blues again. I know I won't be in Hawaii for all that long, but I'm making the most of it...wherever I end up, I figure as long as I'm learning & am grateful for what I have, I'll be fine. :)
