Amy's Story

Life I graduated from EHS in 1997 and promptly left Ephrata for Flagstaff, AZ. I pursued my degree in Anthropology and after taking a break to work full-time; graduated in December 2004. My husband, Aaron, and I began our Latin American adventure on December 21, 2005. We recently celebrated our one year travel anniversary, and are still unsure whether we will continue into South America. We would love to buy a piece of land somewhere and become expatriates. If we go back to the states we may start trying to have kids. If/when we come back to the states we will probably remain in Flagstaff. I always intended on Flagstaff being the first of many places I would live, but it has a way of keeping people around. We have several pieces of real estate in Flagstaff which thus far remain a tie to the beautiful university town. I always laugh when people call Flagstaff a small town (about 60,000 population), but it does have that charm. We are currently in Central America, and will soon decide whether or not to enter South America. We have a great website where we post our pictures and travel logs from our travels. Check it out at aaronandamy.com, and please register in the lower right hand corner if you would like to receive emails when we update our website. Mindy and I started working on our reunion a long time ago, and there was a flurry of activity last fall by the entire reunion committee in order to get several important things organized and reserved. If we don´t already have your email or physical address, please send it to Mindy, who also has a classmates and myspace site. Hope to see you this August in Ephrata for the reunion! p.s. - the picture posted as my ¨now¨ photo doesn´t do it any justice! You can hardly tell, but Aaron and I are spelunking a cave in Belize that has lots of intact ancient pottery as well as calcified skeletons. The Actun Tunichil Muknal cave was featured in National Geographic magazine several years ago, and one of our friends was the guide that lead the NG team. Pretty awesome! College I started NAU in August of 1997. I didn't know anybody down in Flagstaff when I chose to go to school there, but that was one of its many attractions. I started working on m,y anthropology degree which I always knew I wanted to complete. My Junior year I moved to Athens, Greece and went to school there. I intended to study some archaeology, but was presented with all the classical foundations of academia. I studied ancient Greek architecture, sculpture, religion, history, language and of course archaeology. It was a field-trip oriented school, so we were off seeing some new part of Greece almost every weekend. When there wasn't an organized field-trip going on, st...Expand for more
udents got together and went on trips of their own; wether they were in Greece or neighboring countries. While in Greece I went to Italy twice; once for fall and once for Spring break. During christmas break I spent 3 weeks in Egypt. After school got out in Athens I traveled Western Europe by myself. I started in Austria, onto Switzerland, Germany, Spain, France and Ireland. I came back to school at NAU to finish my bachelor in Anthropology. I was burnt out on school so I decided to work full-time for a while. I slowly completed my degree and recently finished in December. Of course there was a battle at the end regarding whether or not I was actually graduating (there were questions regarding my credits from Greece), but in the end I received my diploma! IN the past I have toyed with the idea of graduate school. At the time it didn't make sense because when I completed grad school I would have been at the age I would want to start having kids; which to me makes grad school a questionable accomplishment. Of course I have so many new interests than those I went to school for; and wish I would have graduated earlier so that I could follow some of these new interests. I became much more interested in Cultural Anthropology (working w/ live people and their issues) than archaeology (digging up the past in order to put together a story about the past). I also have become increasingly excited about photography. In the end I may gain experience in both photography and cultural anthropology issues while on our trip through Latin America. Aaron and I have discussed the idea of writing a book when we get back from our adventure. Workplace When I took a break from school in 2001, I started working at the Grand Canyon Railway. I worked in their administrative offices in Flagstaff, but they run a tourist train that operates from a small town in AZ (Williams) up to the Grand Canyon. I worked there as a secretary, administrative assistant, and human resources assistant for about 3 years. I left the Railway in January of 2004 and went to work with my husband, Aaron. At the time he was a Financial Advisor. I helped him clean, streamline and make his office more efficient. UNfortunately, shortly after I started working for him he became much more involved in his real-estate business. When we decided to take our Latin American trip, he closed his office late October 2004. After finishing school and traveling to WA & CA for Christmas; I began working for another Financial Advisor who worked with Aaron that is a friend of ours. I will work for him temporarily until we are ready to leave Flagstaff at the end of May. From there it will be volunteer work throughout our journey for the next several years!
