Andrew's Story
Hi Folks,
Was very active in music - orchestra and band - at AHS. Got to State Band a couple of years. Participated in our junior play. Not athletic at all while at AHS but later got into racket ball and running. More recently walking, swimming and light gym exercising.
After AHS attended Bucknell Univ '61-'65 where I had far too much fun but managed to graduate with BA in Sociology. Decided to get more degrees and teach college.Seemed like a good idea AND it kept me from the draft and the Vietnam War which I was decidedly against. As well I liked the prospect of having Xmases off and summers off. ;-)
Went on to get an MA '70 in Anthro at the Catholic U. of American in Washington, DC and, rather later, a PhD '86 in Anthro. from Univ of Florida. Wrote a dissertation on the work and health of Chesapeake Bay waterman (commercial fishermen) in the Tangier Sound area near Crisfield and Smith Island, MD.
Took a teaching job at Prince George's Community...Expand for more
College (PGCC) in Maryland near Wash, DC in '68 and retired from there in 2011. While at PGCC took a number of leaves of absence - spent a year in Colombia, SA (1973), about a year in Senegal, West Africa, 2 years at Univ of Florida for a Phd in Cultural Anthropology.
Got into developing and teaching online courses at PGCC and also trained other faculty members how to make the transition from traditional classroom to online teaching.
Married to Joan Chamberlain '68-'73 and we have a son Geoffrey who is a Urologist practicing in Charlottesville, VA and residing there with his family.
Later married Elizabeth Kyle Courtney in 1976 and we have resided in Crofton. Maryland since 1980. Our daughter, Gretchen, and her family reside in Radnor, PA.
Since retiring from full time teaching in 2011, I teach a few online anthropology courses for PGCCollege and do an increasing amount of traveling. Been spending Februaries in St. Martin, French West Indies.
