Andrew's Story
Life
After West, I flunked out of the U of M - a grand failure - and enlisted in the Coast Guard rather than be drafted. I spent a year on an icebreaker in the Great Lakes, a year on the East Coast, and two years in San Francisco, where I landed in summer 1967. I've been here ever since.
Lynn DeHemmer and I married in 1968, hung in there for 18 years, then called it quits. We have one son, now 22, whom we love dearly. Raising him was like slicing butter. He's a master mechanic, lives with his sweety, and usually fogets he has parents. He came to live with me when he was five, and it was the two of us against the world in a shack by a creek for 15 years.
After the CG, I re-entered the flower business, spending six years running two shops in and near The City, until I burned out. I learned how to drive a truck and drove semi's cross country for about 10 years. I was in and out of 47 states extensively, loved every second it, ruined three disks in my back, developed chronic ...Expand for more
meloncholy and a tendency to tell tall tales.
In '87 I returned to school, double majored in English Lit and Religious Studies, graduated from Dominican College in San Rafael Magna Cum Laude (shove it, U of M!) and began teaching at Salesian High School in Richmond, Ca. in 1993. Here I will stay until they carry me out.
I married in 1999, again, and the adventure started, again.
I find it very strange that I am at the age when my next career move is retirement. West seems so long ago, and only yesterday. The summer it was torn down I had dreams about the place about once a week, before I learned it was being torn down. Had I known, I would have come back and sewn salt into the ground. Still, I look at those years now with a kind of wistfullness. I ran into Mr. Risser on a visit to Mpls in '94, and was able to apologize to him for the misery I caused him in his first year. I got paid back in spades my first year as a teacher. I would love to hear from anyone.
