Life After West, I flunked out of the U of M - a grand failure - and enlisted in the Coast Guard rather than be drafted. I spent a year on an icebreaker in the Great Lakes, a year on the East Coast, and two years in San Francisco, where I landed in summer 1967. I've been here ever since. Lynn DeHemmer and I married in 1968, hung in there for 18 years, then called it quits. We have one son, now 22, whom we love dearly. Raising him was like slicing butter. He's a master mechanic, lives with his sweety, and usually fogets he has parents. He came to live with me when he was five, and it was the two of us against the world in a shack by a creek for 15 years. After the CG, I re-entered the flower business, spending six years running two shops in and near The City, until I burned out. I learned how to drive a truck and drove semi's cross country for about 10 years.
